Description: Sketch of model Maori pā, Whakarewarewa, showing Puarenga Stream nearby. Areas for various activities and location of various buildings are labelled: pataka, matmaking, carving shed, wharepuni, wharau, large rununga, whareariki, pataki timanga, Ipu pataka, pouwhaka tupua, tuaahu kauhanga-nui, whare tohunga. Some elements of the sketch are drawn in red ink, including a gateway labelled 'Proposed', and some are drawn in black ink, including a gateway labelled 'Present'. Historian Don Stafford described Rotowhio as an early Ngati Tama village which was close to a small 'lake of blue ducks' within the Whakarewarewa Reserve (see 'The history and placenames of Rotorua', 'The new century in Rotorua: a history of events from 1900', and 'The founding years in Rotorua: a history of events to 1900 ' by Donald Murray Stafford). Description: Photograph album formerly belonging to Phyllis Johnston. Contain images taken during visit to South Seas Exhibition in Dunedin and a North Island road trip. Compiler of albums, and photographer(s), are unidentified. Album is extensively captioned. - Images of Dunedin area are taken during a holiday to the New Zealand and South Seas International Exhibition in 1924-1925. Photographs of sights include a bus trip to Waipori via Outram (including the Waipori River and power station), St Clair Beach (including the Baths and Tomahawk), waves at Ocean Beach, Dunedin Botanic Gardens, Portobello, Harbour Ferry, Octagon and Cathedral, Dunedin Train Station, Stewart Street Cable Car, Otago University Clock Tower, Otago Boys High, Evansdale river scenes, and North East Valley. Exhibition photos show the Exhibition Buildings, the grand court water feature, 'Maori House', and Amusement Park 'The Three Castles' (including the entrance and the 'Ye Old Mill River Caves' roller coaster and 'Giant's Mouth' rides). - Album also covers a January 1928 North Island road trip in a Model T Ford, departing from Levin. Camping grounds, camping sites, the preparation of meals and washing up, car with camping awning erected and camping gear packed on side, picnics, and tourist sites are featured. Description: Album of scenic views of New Zealand, many taken by Thomas Pringle, others taken by photographers from the New Zealand Tourist Department, and others by unidentified photographers. A number are hand-coloured. South Island scenes include Milford Sound, lake and mountain views, and some of Christchurch city. North island scenes include a number in Wellington, with views of city streets, the Chief Post Office, Government Buildings, St John's Church and the railway station. Most of the other North Island views are of tourist destinations, particularly in the thermal regions, with hot springs, geysers and mud pools. Discusses getting patterns from England and trying to keep the materials true to the times. Recalls an old hand sewing machine and getting children to use it.
