Date: 1907

By: Lloyd, Trevor, 1863-1937

Reference: C-109-018

Description: Twenty-two comic versions of paintings some Maori, some Pakeha. The central image is a parody of a Goldie portrait: "A noble relic of a vanished feast' [i. e. race] showing a profile view of a tattooed Maori man, clutching a human leg-bone, with an evil expression on his face. For an ear adornment he wears a smoking pipe and part of a watch-chain through a hole in his ear. His eye-tooth protrudes as a fang onto his lower lip. "One of the famous Ngaitape tribe" shows a gorilla-like man; "The flirt" shows an ugly Maori woman looking coyly from behind a fan; the remaining views are of Pakeha; "A neglected spot" shows the back view of a man with a circular bald patch; "The singer - the song that reached my heart" shows a profile of a man singing with his mouth very wide open; "The tannery" shows an industrial building with two men holding their noses outside it; "A windy day" and "A question of colour" both show fashionable women at a disadvantage. "The old garden" shows a garden infested with snails and caterpillars, with a rooster atop a tree that has been subjected to topiary; "Running for shelter" shows a paddle steamer in rough weather with a death's head on the mast and "Broke down - the Rescue" shows a wrecked steamer on its side; a group of photographers is caricatured in an untitled sketch centre bottom. The original for a cartoon published in the Auckland Weekly news, 25 April 1907, supplement, p. 7 Other Titles - [Scenes of Maori life. Former title] Inscriptions: Recto - bottom left - T. L. Quantity: 1 drawing(s). Physical Description: Ink and wash 340 x 480 mm
