Description: Four photographic prints pasted onto a board with captions, taken by an unknown photographer on 11 November 1967. The photographs show close ups and distance views of the orchestra in concert and are generally taken from the back right of the town hall. They are captioned: “Leonora No. 4 Overture” “Concerto Populare” “Young Lochnivar. Peter Read & Divina Whitehouse” “Concerto Populare (Pianist: David Galbraith)” There are various notations on the verso. Title taken from item. Inscriptions: Mount recto - bottom centre - NZBC Symphony Orchestra - 21st Birthday Concert, Wellington Town Hall - 11 November 1967, Hoffnung Works, Conductor: Juan Matteucci; Mount verso - bottom centre - Webster's Est 1919. Description: Photographic print of The National Orchestra of the New Zealand Broadcasting Service taken by Campbell Commercial Photography Ltd, Dunedin, between 1954 and 1957. It shows the full orchestra on stage in formal dress with instruments, and the conductor James Robertson. A sticker is fixed to the bottom right of the image with the photographers’ details. The verso has various notations and is stamped several times with "New Zealand Broadcasting Service". James Robertson was conductor from 1954 to 1957. Description: Shows three vignettes suggesting unrest over issues within the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra. The first shows a drummer saying to a triangle player: "If I were you, Eric, I'd arrange a redundancy agreement - if there are any lay-offs we all know who'll be the first to be declared redundant, dont we?"; the second shows other musicians exclaiming to a fiddle player: "Why is it always a fiddle-player? we demand the election of orchestra leader by the democratic porcess of a secret ballot!"; the third shows a conductor explaining to the musicians: "The employers want you to accept a 25 percent cut in pay for performing this number - it's in three-quarter time". A letter is taped to the reverse of the board. Description: Collection created by Melva "Joy" Steffens, a friend of composer Douglas Lilburn, comprising correspondence and greeting cards from Lilburn to Joy and Basil Steffens, four photographs taken by Gwyneth Brown with messages from Lilburn written verso, two photographic portraits of Lilburn, and newspaper clippings relating to Lilburn's life and career. Part of the Archive of New Zealand Music. Title supplied by Library. Correspondence from Joy and Basil Steffens to Lilburn can be found at MS-Papers-7623-238 and MS-Papers-2483-095 In the years 1935-36 and from 1941 until he permanently moved to Wellington in 1950, Douglas Lilburn boarded in Christchurch with the Vincent family at 175 Cambridge Terrace. After his departure he maintained correspondence with Joy Steffens and her husband Basil, both of whom also settled at the Cambridge Terrace house. Description: Four cards bearing five images in total, describing concept designs for the NZSO. The first card shows two identical sketches of an orchestra member at the grand piano; one is black and white, one coloured. The other three cards show identical sketches of the orchestra playing; one is black and white, the other two showing varying coloured backdrop designs. The back of each of the cards bears a sticker, possibly of a company named 'Envisage', with a subtitle 'Scenes, locations, studios'. The other image is a reproduction of an unsigned pencil rubbing, showing a cellist and two violinists performing. They are dressed in their formal attire.
