Description: Photograph taken by an unidentified photographer at an unidentified location, circa 1880s. Show a group of Māori sitting on the paepae (porch) of a whare during a tangihanga. The tūpāpaku (deceased person) is clearly visible, shown wrapped in blankets and possibly dressed in a kakahu cloak. Behind the group, details of the whare can be seen including; a pare (lintel) with a figure with raised arms; whakawae (door jab); raupō thatching. Title supplied by Library. Tangihanga of Hawea Te Marama

Description: Copy negative photograph shows the tūpāpaku (body) of an infant, Hawea Te Marama, during a tangihanga. The location is unidentifed, however carvings and wall slats in the background may show the mahau of a wharenui. Te Marama can be seen laid out amongst cloth, flowers and a kahu huruhuru (feathered cloak). To the right, a coffin is visible with a plaque that reads; "Mei 16 1899, KO TE RA TENEI I WHANAU AI A HAWEA TE MARAMA. NO TE IWA O NGA RA O AKUMATA I MATE AI I TE TAU 1899". The plaque records Hawea Te Marama's birth date as 16 May 1899 and date of death as 9 August 1899. Copy negative of a file print made by the Library, circa 1958. Description: Copy negative of the tangihanga for an unidentified women at an unidentified location. Photograph possibly taken by William Beattie or Charles Spencer circa 1897, published in the New Zealand Graphic, March 1897. The deceased wahine can be seen lying in state and covered with cloth, her head is visible. Whānau pani (mourning family) are photographed surrounding the tūpūpaku (desceased). Three are standing and a woman, her face covered with a handkerchief, crouches beside the body. The tangihanga is taking place on the porch of a thatched whare with korowai hanging on the wall behind. Hei whakatūpato: He whakaahua o ngā kōiwi tangata i roto i tēnei taonga.
