Description: A sketch showing onlooers at the crater lake two days after an eruption, with several descriptive annotations. A note at lower left says that the eruption took place on Thursday 15 March 1906, at 11.45 a.m. Notes indicate the peak Para te Taitonga at top right. At lower right a note says: "Deep holes caused through hot stones falling on ice, sulphur deposit around edges of holes". Other notes indicate: glacier and snow, ice, black deposit, solid ice cliffs, milky grey-blue water, steam amd yellow fumes, black hummocks of deposit 4-5 feet high, lake boiling. Description: Watercolour depicting view of Crater Lake on Mount Ruapehu showing rocks and snow. The artist has painted himself into the image. There are two figures standing on the peak. Handritten text below the image reads "Sketched from a point inside the crater on the North side, about 50 feet above the level of the water, on March 8 1984 - Mr Blacket's photo taken from the opposite side of the crater, was done about a year before. Mr Dunnage's first photo taken from the opposite side of the crater, was done about a week after this sketch. His second photo taken from the opposite side of the crater was done in April 1895 soon after the erruption of March 10 1895. The black blot in the left foreground is my head. The two figures on the ridge on the left are Mr Willis and my son Frank. The little stream with a waterfall is just over my head, behind the sharp little rocky peak and between it and the snow-field. Description: Photographs taken by Charles Tenison Salmon about 1906 to 1909. Images include views of the Ohakune/Horopito Road, a Christmas camp in the bush at Ohakune, the volcanic eruption of Mount Ngauruhoe in April 1909, and views taken when traversing the Tongariro National Park. Some photographs show Charles and Marie Salmon in the bush, and one shows three climbers, Charles T. Salmon, Edward Phillips Turner and Hugh Girdlestone. Views on the Ohakune-Horopito Road show a team of horses pulling an empty dray, and one of a group of people waiting while their carriage crosses a ford on the Mangatoetoenui River. Description: Transparency slides of New Zealand selected by Mr Williams as a representative collection to be used in a series of lectures on his return to England. This group includes both slides Mr Williams took himself, and slides he purchased. This sheet shows a sheep drover on horseback with a pack horse and two dogs herding a flock of sheep near Gisborne; a woman sitting on a tree stump overlooking Lake Taupo and the mountains; fumarole vents near Lake Taupo; the Chateau Tongariro on Mount Ruapehu; a man standing beside the Crater Lake on Ruapehu; Mount Ngauruhoe; a garden in New Plymouth; a distant view of the house "Tupare" near new Plymouth; Mount Egmont; views on the road to Tokaora; railway line running through the centre of Palmerston North; the Manawatu Gorge; a street in Masterton; the Wairarapa plains and sheep farms; a stand of cabbage trees; dry riverbed of the Putangirua River en route to the Putangirua Pinnacles, and a view of the Pinnacles. The slides are not in his original numerical sequence, and are selected by subject relating to particular talks.
