Description: Handwritten and signed by Turau Kawa to a son or grandchild as both a lament and whakapapa with Northland connections. Refers to an incident which happened at sea when a large group of people were drowned in a waka. The seas were stormy, but it is unclear as to whether the deaths were due to weather or to some battle. This possibly occurred in the Kaipara Harbour (also known as Te Kai Whara). Description: Five photographs of anchors from the St Jean Baptiste, which had been commanded by Jean de Surville, and which sank in Doubtless Bay in 1769. Two anchors were found by Kelly Tarlton in 1974. These photographs show the first anchor (and the second?). Also a photograph of the former cray boat the Miss Akaroa, probably at Napier. Description: Translation by the Translation Service of the New Zealand Department of Internal Affairs of "parts of a photostat copy of a booklet in the Swedish language" entitled "The Wreck of the French Corvette 'Alcmene' ". The wreck occurred in June 1851. The booklet was published in Stockholm in 1896. The title page notes that the account was written by Ph Virgin "from accounts by the corvette's paymaster M. Bérard and notes left by Second Lieutenant Count Augustin Ehrensvard". Comprises translation/transcription of flyleaf, title and dedication pages, verses and foreword, and report from the Alcmene's arrival in Hobart Town, 12 January 1851 and its departure after repairs for New Zealand in May. The storm is graphically described as is the crew and passengers' departure from the sinking vessel, and their attempt (and success) in making their way to Kaipara by 23 June. The translation notes that the booklet was number 33 of 100. The last page is stamped by the Translation Service of the Department of Internal Affairs and dated 8 November 1962.
