Description: The engraving March to Finchley was based on a historic moment, probably witnessed by Hogarth himself. It depicted British troops being marched out of London to their place of rendezvous on Finchley Common in December 1745, to defend the city against the threat of Jacobite invasion. The engraving was given as a receipt to the subscribers of the print `The March to Finchley'. It represents a stand of various weapons, bagpipes, etc, and a pair of scissors cutting out the arms of Scotland, all arranged on a short plinth. Description: Shows 'Touai' (Tuai) at left in European dress with bayonet, and 'Chongui' (Hongi Hika) in Maori dress with a long staff or club at right. Danvin has copied this image from de Sainson's original work entitled "Shonguy.Touai" in Dumont d'Urville's "Voyage pittoresque autour du monde..." Paris, 1834. vol.2, opp. p.371 (qRare 910.8 DUM Voya). Sainson has in turn copied his image from Jules Louis Lejeune's "Naturels de la Nouvelle Zelande" - originals done 1824, and copied for publication 1826 - see ATL copies at C-082-096/097. From a French edition of Domeny di Rienzi's "Oceanie" not held by the Library; ATL's copies have title of work in either 2 or 3 languages beneath the image, whereas this work has title in French only. The book was reissued several times between its original publication in 1836-37 and 1872. ATL has 1863 edition at 919 DOM. Duperrey's ship, the "Coquille" visited New Zealand in April 1824. Tuai slept on board several times. Hongi was offered the chance to sleep on board, but refused. (See: "New Zealand seen by the French" (1991) page 18.) Winston Peters is happy with the gloomy forecasts for the economy. Comment on the risk to children of TB due to poverty, poor nutrition and other health related problems. New Minister outside of Cabinet, Marie Hasler wants to change the NZ flag to say something like 'NZ for sale as, where is!' Jenny Shipley says it's not quite what they're looking for. National's Bill Birch reassures the NZ public about the world wide economic crisis. Jenny Shipley calls for a confidence vote for National's 'vague and ill-defined policies.' National Party Finance minister, Bill Birch panics about the world economic situation. Jenny Shipley reassures the public National has a calm and sober hand on the economic tiller. The new Minister of Police, Clem Simich promises to raise police morale. A senior police officer asks Simich if he's resigning already. Comment on America's hypocritical rage over the Clinton-Lewinsky affair as they enjoy the lurid details provided by newspapers and the Starr Report. Kenneth Starr, Prosecutor in the Clinton-Lewinsky case joins the Presidential Assassin Hall of Fame, his weapon, the Monica Lewinsky tapes. War crimes go unchecked in Kosovo as the world media focus on Bill Clinton's sex life. The Government reconsiders it's plans to deregulate producer boards following a hostile reaction from fruit growers. Jenny Shipley reassures elderly New Zealanders that national super will not be cut but it will be allowed to fall behind the cost of living. Treasury cuts medical care for children under six. Description: Photographs of military activities and war work in New Zealand during World 2, 1939-1945, taken by various photographers and compiled for official use. This album contains photographs on pages 1-54 (Pages 55-149 are empty). Activities include training in building of fascines and revetments for protecting trench walls; barbed wire "concertina"; excavation of command posts (part of a defensive trench system); the use of a 2" mortar; anti-tank rifle instruction; instruction in identifying enemy weapons including grenades and land mines and use of an electric mine detector. The cookery wing in action in the open air; artillery school of instruction; signallers establishing communication & erecting a telegraph pole; use of a 25-pounder; bayonet practice; medical training including rescue of wounded, use of an improvised stretcher, improvised raft for a river crossing carrying the stretcher, transfer to an ambulance, and finally a view of an actual open-air operation. The arrival of Mrs Eleanor Roosevelt, shown with New Zealand dignitaries (p 18). Men and women who have returned on furlough parading through Wellington on their way to a luncheon given in their honour by the RSA (p 19-21, 38-40); the arrival of repatriated Prisoners of War being greeted by friends and family in Wellington (p 33-36) A huge crowd celebrating the victory over the Italians at Liberty Corner, on the intersection of Hunter Street, Featherston Street and Lambton Quay (Friday 3rd September 1943) Ceremonies at an undentified marae including Maori dance, haka, poi dances and speeches by military officers. Pages 28-30 show the visit of a British Military Mission to the Forest & Jungle Warfare Wing of the Army School of Instruction, with demonstrations of jungle training. Infantry students at the Army School, Trentham are shown in a river crossing exercise near Foxton, building rafts big enough to carry people, vehicles and weaponry.
