Description: Isobel Conning was born in Auckland on 12 July 1922. Describes her childhood as the youngest of a large family growing up in Auckland during the Depression. Notes that treats were rare but that the family had a simple bach on Rangitoto Island. Describes holidays there and a love of swimming. Talks about Sunday School and church. Recalls leaving school, becoming an office worker and a social life which included going to movies and milk bars. Talks about joining the Women's National Service Corps which was run along the same lines as the Army. Notes its emphasis on discipline and drill. Describes being in a group of one of eight women who were the first to be called up into the Army. Talks about her work as personal assistant to the Quartermaster including stocktaking trips to Motutapu Island. Describes batteries within their regiment and their stations. Recalls the physical condition of allied forces when they were repatriated from Japanese prisoner of war camps. Comments on post war housing shortages and transit camps. Talks about the war-time service of her brother Frank Simmons. Comments on the sense of duty during the war and notes that there was also fun. Talks briefly about her marriages to Stanley Elwood in 1947 and Mervyn Conning in 1964.
