Grant, Alastair, 1938-: Photographs taken by Alastair Grant during the Vietnam War

Date: June 1966-January 1967

By: Grant, Alastair, 1938-

Reference: ATL-Group-00220

Description: Photographs taken by Alastair Grant between 1966-1967 throughout his first term with the New Zealand Civilian Surgical Team during the Vietnam War. Images predominantly show the daily life of Binh Dinh Province Hospital, Qui Nhon, and the work of the New Zealand Civilian Surgical team, including portraits of the patients and their families, New Zealand and Vietnamese medical staff, casualties in the wards, and surgery. Other images depict daily life in Qui Nhon and landscape and coastal views of the surrounding environs. Also includes photographs taken during a field trip to Dak To Base Camp in the Central Highlands, and during a leave period spent in Hong Kong. Comprises film negatives with matching contact sheets, sets of loose photographic prints developed from some of the film negatives, and colour slides. Alastair Grant used his photographs for his presentations to the Royal Australian College of Surgeons. Some of his photographs were published in the Evening Post newspaper in 1967 on his return. Dates, descriptive information, and identification of persons are taken from information supplied by Alastair Grant. Photographs were taken by Alastair Grant on his on his Canon Dial camera. All photographic materials were developed in 1966. The film negatives and photographic prints were developed in Qui Nhon by a local Vietnamese business. The colour slides were developed by Kodak in San Francisco. Alastair Grant developed the contact sheets himself. Record titles have been supplied by the Library. Arrangement: Loose photographic prints were delivered in sets bound by rubber bands. The sets appear to contain images taken in the same locations or of the same subjects. The slides were in a box. This order was preserved by the archivist. The contact sheets and 35mm film negatives were delivered together in an unlabelled office ringbinder. Each contact sheet shows images from six of the negative film strips. The relationship between the contact sheets and film negatives has been recorded by the archivist by noting the Library reference number of a contact sheet in the record for the associated 35mm negative strip and vice versa. Surgeon and photographer Alastair Grant worked two terms with the New Zealand Civilian Surgical Team during the Vietnam War in 1966-1967 and 1972. Grant had worked at Tauranga Hospital before his time in Vietnam as had some of his colleagues. A keen photographer from childhood, he documented his experiences between June 1966 to January 1967 when he was based at Binh Dinh Province Hospital and living at Capitol House in Qui Nhon. A major focus was to document the conditions at the hospital. During his first term Grant did a job swap which resulted in a week long field trip to the Central Highlands of Vietnam. Quantity: 226 b&w original photographic print(s). 402 b&w original negative(s) on 61 x 35mm negative strips. 12 b&w original photographic print(s) contact sheets for the 35mm negative strips. 25 colour original transparency/ies. Physical Description: Black and white photographic prints, black and white 35mm film negative strips, and colour transparency slides in card mounts Transfers: Contact sheets and film negatives were housed separately for conservation reasons.. Processing information: The original housing for the film negatives was not of conservation standard and was not retained. Not all names are indexed. In July 2020 Alastair Grant viewed the contact sheets and colour transparencies to identify the image content. The archivist has included the full details of information supplied by Alastair Grant in the descriptive records for the matching negatives strips, and in records for the colour transparencies. Where possible the archivist has identified the relationship between individual prints made from some of the negatives in the descriptive records. Where Grant identified New Zealand persons, the negative frame number or reference number of the relevant print is written in the scope and contents field of the descriptive record.
