Description: Album of photographs, chiefly showing scenes in Western Australia, particularly around Coolgardie and Norseman. Most of the identified views were taken by Hemus & Hall (a photographic firm in Bayley Street, Coolgardie between 1895 and 1906). A number of views show the use of camels and camel trains in Western Australia, with one showing the first steam train entering Coolgardie on 23rd March 1896. Many of the images are unidentified, but two are shown as being in New Zealand. One shows the Thames Pharmacy, owned by George Denby; and the other is a bush scene at Waikawau. They show military personnel in Egypt around the battles of Magdhaba (1916) and Rafah (1917). Description: Contains photographs relating to the Sinai and Palestine campaigns of World War I, taken by various, mainly unidentified, photographers. - Includes photographs relating to the New Zealand Mounted Rifles, mainly the Auckland Mounted Rifles. Images feature military transportations and convoys including those featuring camels carrying supplies and fording a waadi, horses, mules, the S S 'Willochra' at steam, the Auckland Regiment Transport camped at Bethlehem in August 1918, the construction of the first ANZAC bridge over the River Jordan and various groups crossing it, and a convoy that has been attacked on the Beyrout [Beirut] Road with dead animals and wrecked carts, and a convoy on the road to Jerusalem near the Garden of Gethsemane. Other images include Turkish and German prisoners of war (including a large group at Kastal and a small group of officers), war graves and burial scene, the bodies of two soldiers killed in action, various military camps (including Ferry Post Camp), air craft (including a plane that has been shot down and H M A 'Carthusian' taken by A J Iles), the wreck of a British Mother Tank in Gaza, and an unidentified man posing beside an anti-aircraft gun. Recreation scenes show the New Zealand sports day at Richon and rugby game between New Zealand and Australian troops on New Year's Day 1919. - General Allenby appears in a number of images including motoring through Paris following victory in Jerusalem and at the New Zealand sports day at Richon, Palestine (also with Major General Edward William Clervaux Chaytor). A group photograph shows unidentified soldiers on board the S S 'Willochra', an unidentified portrait taken by T G Palmer (Cameron Street, Whangarei) with four young soldiers in uniform, and four men mounted on horses after winning hurdles team event at Tauherenikau in 1918. - Includes one aerial image of an unidentified coastal camp. Description: Lantern slides of Africa, including identifiable places and scenes in Egypt, Sudan, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, and South Africa. The images were taken by unidentified photographers, probably in the 1930s. Some slides have captions written on paper affixed to the glass, that describe the location or subject. Seven of the copy images are from a larger numbered sequence of commercial slides. The images include: - Scenes in African villages and rural locations showing: herding of cattle, use of mortar and pestle, streets with dwellings, building of a hut, weaving, drying of crocodile skin, markets, man holding snakes, and people carrying bowls on their heads. - Members of various African tribes, including the Dinka people of Sudan and the Kikuyu people of Kenya (also known as Agikuyu). - Ruins of the ancient city of Great Zimbabwe. - Colonial buildings, including the Maputo Railway Station (Mozambique). - Coconut and other palms, banana, and baobab trees. - Camels being ridden, pulling wagons with barrels, or resting. - Sisal being produced, including stripping and drying of the fibre. - Scenes in Egypt, including the pyramids and the Great Sphinx of Giza, Aswan Dam, the Cairo Museum, streets and buildings of Cairo, and wharfs and boats along the Nile. - The Amphitheatre in the Drakensberg Range in South Africa.
