Description: Album of photographs taken aboard Maunganui on following voyages: Port Chalmers to Liverpool, England. Left Port Chalmers 2 May 1918, called at Wellington (3-9 May 1918), Balboa (28 May 1918), Panama Canal and Colon (29-30 May 1918), Norfolk VA (4-10 June 1918), New York (11-12 June 1918), arrived Liverpool 24 July 1918. Three Transatlantic crossings between Liverpool, Glasgow, and New York, August-November 1918. Liverpool, England, to Port Chalmers, with returned New Zealand soldiers. Left Liverpool 2 December 1918, called at Colon (18-19 December 1918), Panama Canal and Balboa (19 December 1918), Auckland (9 January 1919), Wellington (11-15 January 1919), arrived Port Chalmers 16 January 1919. Includes views of Panama Canal locks and gates, ferries at Norfolk VA, United States and British warships, soldiers playing two-up on the ship returning home, and ferries in Auckland Harbour. Description: Album includes a large section of British naval ships, some travelling in convoy, some camouflaged, with closeup views of armaments and naval personnel, taken by unidentified photographers during World War I. It appears that the creator of the album was serving on the SS Parattah. A section in the album covers a port-of-call by the Parattah to Nauru and the Loyalty Islands, showing scenes and aspects of life on the islands, including several related to the phosphate industry on Nauru. There are a number of images of a group on camels near the Spinx and pyramids in Egypt, dated 1919, followed by a section on the Yosemite area, California, with scenic views of mountains and valleys, and several showing the "largest tree in the world". The last section in the album covers the royal tour of HRH The Prince of Wales in 1920, in Sydney. Description: Shows a shipboard scene below deck, in a smoky atmosphere, where four bare chested men are operating a ship's cannon while an officer gives orders. At the left, a robed helper lifts away the slumped body of a fifth man. One man is about to light the fuse of the cannon. There is another smoking cannon in the background. The initials ASMA after the artist's name, stand for American Society of Marine Artists. Inscriptions: Recto - bottom right - [Signed and dated]; Verso - top left - [Title] Quantity: 1 acrylic(s). Description: Shows an unidentified woman standing beside a Kinman cannon (made in 1808) on display at the Britomart Reserve, Akaroa. A plaque on the cannon says 'Ordance gun from the HMS Britomart which arrived at Akaroa 10 August 1840'. Wooden colonial period building and bare tree visible in background. Photograph taken by the Steffano Webb Photographic Studio, Christchurch. Source of additional descriptive information - Location provided by Library client. Information on cannon provided by the Akaroa Civic Trust (see website www.akaroacivictrust.co.nz 7 September 2012) Cannon placed on Britomart Reserve in 1908 and described as being from the HMS Britomart, a British naval vessel which came to Akaroa in 1840 to demonstrate British sovereignity over the South Island. The 1808 Kinman cannon had been sent out by the British Admiralty for display at the 1906-1907 International Exhbition held in Christchurch. The cannon had ben requested by Akaroa Mayor Etienne Le Lievre. After the closure of the Exhibition, the cannon was sent to Akaroa. It is the same type of cannon that would have been on the HMS Britomart, but is not from the Britomart itself. Source of descriptive information - Negative register and inscriptions on negative.
