Description: Roger Cooper recalls subjects taken at school and described how he travelled there. Mentions a Teaching Fellowship, his University studies and the supervision of Prof. Harold Wellman. Describes working on a U.N. Development programme in Borneo and gives reasons for difficulty in recruiting geologists. Talks of working for the DSIR, mentions Russell Dick from Lands and Survey Dept., Dick Willert - a director of Geological Survey. Explains that Dorothy (Dot) Berry completed her degree in biology after their marriage and before joining him in Borneo, and describes her geological surveying there. Talks of her increased interest in paleontology and his PhD in Dunedin and Wellington. Mentions that their son Alan was born in Dunedin and describes their mobile lifestyle when coping with a baby on field trips when collecting fossils. Describes the family's love of the bush. Recalls twenty years of field trips, Westhaven Inlet, Aorangi Mine, Lake Daniels, North West Nelson, Cobb Valley, the geological importance and mapping of sites, mentioning Prof. Benson of Otago University. Describes the family's involvement with fossilized bones, son Alan's significant discovery of a cave of bones and identification of them by Trevor Worthy of Victoria University. Relates that the children attended school in England and discusses English and New Zealand schools. Explains molecular biology and Alan's PhD, the study of ancient DNA and talks of Alan Wilson of Berkeley, California, Dr. Svante Paabo, world leader in this field. Description: Describes being a self taught palaeontologist who discovered that dinosaurs inhabited New Zealand 65-70 million years ago. Describes six years in the Air Force before marrying in 1953 and having two children. Comments on becoming interested in natural history as a result of her children. Recalls the Wiffen family joining the local Rock and Mineral Club, developing an interest in fossils, using geological survey maps to identify possible sites and discovering a fossil bone in a Hawkes Bay stream. Describes how techniques to extract the bones from rock, make casts of the bones and send them overseas for identification and write papers for scientific journals were all self taught. Describes how she was unable to present the paper on her discovery at a conference because it would have no credibility coming from an untrained person. Mentions the paper was delivered at the Gondwana Conference at Victoria University in 1980 by Dr Ralph Molnar. Discusses more recent discoveries of fossilised insects. Comments on some condescension from male scientists. Notes that there have been discoveries of three carnivorous dinosaurs, three herbivorous dinosaurs and one flying reptile.
