Description: Group of nine loose album pages include - Views of European cities, one a triumphal arch at Marsailles, France. Families in New Zealand photographed outside houses. Views of Auckland. Native forest with displays of tree ferns, a nikau palm and freycinetia. Auckland Harbour, yachts, ships and an explosion. Scenes from the North Shore Native Regatta and Aquatic Carnival held from 28 December 1898 to 3 January 1899 in conjunction with the Auckland Industrial and Mining Exhibition of 1898/99. Included are - Maori dances including haka. Group diving and swimming. General view of the audience. The manuka and raupo houses built by the Maori visitors. A war canoe that took part in the canoe races. Some groups of Maori visitors. Carved house at Te Kuiti photographed by Josiah Martin some time in the 1880s. Tourists and Maori at Whakrewarewa in the 1890s. Studio portrait of a Maori woman in traditional costume, ca 1890s. The North Shore Native Regatta and Aquatic Carnival was an event held in conjuction with the Auckland Industrial and Mining Exhibition of 1898/99. Included large contingents of Māori from the East Coast and Rotorua. As well as canoe races and other sports, there were dance and singing performances by Māori, and the construction of six living whare from manuka and raupo. Also included was the Inter-Colonial Yatching Championship that included yachts brought over from Sydney. The event opened on 28 December 1898 and closed 3 January 1899. The programme includes a grand decorated float parade with illuminated floats, an opening ceremony, a grand Olympic Circus (with gymnasts, skaters, weight lifter, trick cyclist, drum majorettes and a bull fight), an international garden show, fashion parade (compered by 1ZB radio personality Marina), "Miss Auckland" parade, fireworks display, a pageant titled "Night of the Maori Race", a donkey derby and open gymkhana, Empire cavalcade, international fiesta, and a Battle of Flowers. The last page lists the commercial exhibits in the Trade Exhibition. The central spread shows photographs of all the candidates for "Miss Auckland": Pat Bullock, Ida She Cheong, Joy Clow, Joyce Fussell, Betty Gallagher, Shirley Hall, Gloria Jackson, Mary McDonald, Beverley Page, Heather Redwood, Margaret Shepherd, Noeline Swinton, June Sharpe, Colleen Turbett.
