Description: Lantern slides showing historical sites and scenic views in Italy, Switzerland, France, England, and unidentified countries. The images were taken ca 1950s by unidentified photographers. Some slides have captions written on paper affixed to the glass, that describe the location and subject. The images include: - Buildings and ruins in Rome and the Vatican City, such as St Peter's Basilica, the Colosseum, and the Roman Forum. Two images of a middle-aged woman, probably a companion of the photographer, standing in the streets (she also appears in image of Lake Garda). - Notable places in other Italian cities, including the basilica in Assisi, the Mausoleum of Theodica in Ravenna, the Ponte de Vecchio in Florence, and Genoa Harbour. Also buildings in Venice, including the Rialto, St Mark's Basilica, and the Palazzo Ducale. Six of the images of Venice are in colour. - Scenes among the ruins of Pompeii, including the forum and the House of the Faun. - Two street scenes in the Swiss town of Gruyeres; grape vines near Geneva; and two images of the river running through the French town of Annecy, one showing the Palais de l'Isle. - The front gate of Hampton Court, near London. Description: Photographs of churches, public buildings, and houses in England, New Zealand, Australia, and Italy. In New Zealand, Wellington, Christchurch, and Dunedin feature with photographs of the cities, and some of their principle buildings. Central Otago, Southland, and the Queenstown area are represented by landscape views. The same is true for the Australian cities of Melbourne and Geelong. In particular there are two good views of the interior of St Paul's Cathedral, Melbourne and of the recently built town hall and post office. There are several photographs of a large viaduct being built. Pisa is represented by the leaning tower and the west end of the cathedral. There are also several views taken in Guatemala. Grouped throughout the album are photographs of popular art works. Album inscribed J L Shaw, Geelong, 1875. High proportion of Melbourne & Geelong photographs signed by Thomas J Washbourne, who had a studio at 89 Swanston Street, Melbourne, in the late 1860s (see "The Mechanical Eye in Australia, by Davies & Stanbury, p 250).
