Railways album 6

Description: Publicity photographs taken for New Zealand Railways circa 1930 to 1931 by unidentified photographers. Some subjects have images dotted throughout the album, including the arrival in New Zealand of Lord and Lady Bledisloe in March 1930; the arrival in 1931 of Sir Francis Chichester after his crossing of the Tasman in his bi-plane; various activities at the Hillside Railway Workshops, including a group portrait of staff; and various images relating to Railways ticket offices, advertisements for railway tours and excursions, photographs of tickets, and an advertisement for house removals by train. A series of views show athletic sports including running races, hurdles, cycle racing, and long-jump. There are scenes showing the international sportsman Dr Otto Peltzer winning the 880 yards, handicap race at Wellington, on 8th February 1930. Team sports are shown in two views of a women's hockey team playing on the field below Victoria University College, and a series on rugby football, including views of the 5th test between Britain and New Zealand at Athletic Park in 1930. Railways head office picnic, including races by men, women and children (p 35-36), and a huge crowd at Paekakariki Beach, picnicking and swimming (p 70). Official occasions include scenes of the Empire and Australian Farmers' Tour, a view of the cortege at Sir Joseph Ward's funeral outside Parliament Buildings, the opening of Massey Memorial, and various views of unidentified railway officials in personal and group portraits, including one of the members of the New Zealand Railway Commission. Description: Volume one of 'The 9.5 am' Feb 1902 to Jan 1903. Contains whimsical articles about political and 'colonial' life. Includes jokes, poems, extracts, and illustrations. In an inscription on the inside cover of this volume, Johannes Andersen describes himself as "Editor, article writer, anecdotist, P.D. et hoc gen an". Includes images of people, buildings and landscapes in the Canterbury, Otago and Southland Regions including: - The Canterbury Provincial Council Buildings captioned as "Offices of the 9.5 am". - Pigeon Bay, Banks Peninsula. - Several photographs of F M B Fisher who "left with the 19th contingent April 19, 1902" and a poem about Fisher leaving for the South African War, 1899-1902 (aka Boer War) titled 'A Farewell'. Also an image of "The Tenth Contingent passing City Council Chambers". Pages 81-83 and 95-98 of this volume features 'Tramps Abroad' written by Fisher, relating to his experiences of the South African War. - The 'Onawe', 'Fleet Wing', and 'Zephyr' yachts. Captioned as "At Lyttelton Regatta Day" (located between p35 and 36). - "The editor and his assistants. No 4 going to print" which features Andersen and other men working on issue 4 of the '9.5 am' (located between p37 and 38). - A 'Travellers' Notes' article relating to Culverden, and a hand-drawn coloured map of the area surrounding Culverden, which includes the Wairau and Pahau Rivers, and the towns of Culverden, Rotheram, St Leonards and Cheviot. - A full-page coloured hand-drawn cartoon titled 'A fantod. Drawn from life' which includes images of a devil, snakes and spiders, and text "D.T [in German DER TEUFEL]" (between p48 and 49). - A garden scene, including three women, captioned as "Opposite Mile Road, near Stanmore Bridge". - Waimakariri from bed North of Otarama, and Waimakariri from bank near Otarama. - A coloured hand-drawn cartoon captioned "Our special artist at Sumner. Who is it?" featuring a man with a very long nose, upon which are dangled a bunch of carrots. The man is riding a small donkey. - A photograph of Johannes Andersen 'Our fighting editor'. - The Southern Alps captioned 'The backbone of New Zealand'. - 'Land sale at Darfield' featuring men inside a wooden building. - Images of the Avon River. - The Post Office building in Ashburton. - Eight photographs of Hanmer and the surrounding area, including images of the Sanitorium. - A section titled 'Southward Ho!' which includes photographs of Port Chalmers, the 'Mararoa' steam ship, and 'Falls on Fraser River (Stewarts Island)'. - An article relating to the 52nd Anniversary of the Canterbury Province, located at p114 of the volume (Jan 1, 1903). It includes a photograph of some stone and wooden buildings captioned as "'The Ark'. A specimen of archaic architecture". Description: Photographs of areas in the South Island taken by various identified and unidentified photographers, with several taken by "Guy" (i.e. Guy Clayton Morris). Photographs include a very clear image of the interior of a mountain hut (no. 04) showing two unidentified men, one lying on an upper bunk and the other seated on a box under the window, cooking and kitchen equipment and a metal-bound soda siphon. There are two interior photographs of the Hermitage, one showing the closed-in verandah, and the other showing the dining room. Others of interest are an early view of the first Lower Greenstone Huts, and one which is possibly of the early days of William Batson's accomodation house.
