Tapestries of Harraniya Craft Village, and traditional dresses, Egypt

Date: 1980

From: Feeney, John Patrick, 1922-2006 :Photographs

Reference: PA12-6304

Description: Photographs of hariniya or tapestry, Egypt. There are portraits of weavers, and interior views of a weaving workshop. Photographed by John Feeney in 1980. Harraniya Craft Centre was set up in 1952 based on the idea that children were naturally creative. It began as an experiment putting this proposition into action. The Egyptian educator Habib Gorgy was one of the movers behind this project. The others were his son in law, Ramses Wassif, and his wife Sophie. Initially children were taken on aged eight to ten. They were encouraged to work from their imaginations, rather than pre-design the work. The result was successful to the extent that the tapestries are recognised as a modern Egyptian art form and are represented in art museums and public buildings all over the world. Photographs of tapestries were taken to illustrate an article by John Feeney `Tapestries of Harraniya' published in Saudi Aramco World, September/October 1982 Quantity: 21 colour original transparency/ies. Physical Description: Dye coupler tranparencies, 35mm, mounted
