The Wattie Book of the Year Award
A national New Zealand literary prize established in 1968. Supported by the New Zealand Publishers Association, and named for the principal sponsor Wattie's, the company of Sir James Wattie. First title to win was 'The New Zealand Sea Shore' by John Morton and Michael Miller. First novel to win was 'Smith's Dream' by C K Stead in 1972.
The Award became known as the Goodman Fielder Wattie Awards circa 1987 to 1993 after the Wattie's company name changed to Goodman Fielder Wattie Ltd. Then when Montana Wines became the sponsor in 1994, the awards were known as the Montana Book Awards 1994 to 1995.
