Earnslaw (Paddle steamer)

Excursionist paddle steamer (NZ Maritime Vessel ID 500500270), 165 feet, twin screw steam, coal fired with kauri decking. Built in 1911/1912 by John McGregor & Co Ltd in Dunedin and then re-assembled at Kingston on Lake Wakatipu. Made first trip from Kingstown to Queenstown on 18 Oct 1912.

Leased in 1969 to Lake Wakatipu Steamship Company. Lease reassigned to Manapouri-Doubtful Sound Tourist Company, whose subsidiary Fjordland Travel ran her. Bought by Fiordland Travel in 1982. The 75th Jubilee of the first trip was celebrated in 1987 with 9 days of festivities with trips on the lake.

There are various sequences as follows: Museum trip to Lake Waikaremoana, December 1946; Holiday trip in 1937 which included Mohaka, Lake Waikaremoana and Urewera Country; Cass-Torlesse biological trip, February 1936; South Island trip, March 1939; and a Southern Lakes and Hollyford Valley trip in January 1940. The holiday trip in 1937 includes photographs of the Mohaka Viaduct under construction. At the beginning of the album a photograph shows Lake Waikaremoana after 21 years of deterioration due to state Electricity Department actions. This image was taken in January 1958, from approximately the same spot as one taken in February 1937. The Cass-Torlesse biological trip includes an image of "vegetable sheep" (page 48).
