Description: Postcards from the 1910s, with one of the ship RMS Ormonde at the beginning. Most of the views are taken in Britain and Europe, with a few of Australia (inserted in an envelope in a pocket inside front cover, and at the end of the album), and one of the Invercargill water tower and water works (p 046). The British postcards are all tourist views of landscapes, university colleges (Cambridge), churches and other historical buildings, including Hampton Court Palace. Many of the European postcards are again of historical buildings and landscapes, but one sequence shows scenes of war damage in Belgium (pages 058-076). Many of the views show the environment before the first World War, with the same view at the end of the war. Examples of these are at Dixmunde [i.e. Diksmuide, or Dixmude], Ypres, and Ostende [i.e. Oostende]. Quantity: 1 album(s). Others record a walking tour through the Buckinghamshire countryside between Chenies and Rickmansworth which took in a stately home at Moor Park. Description: Lantern slides showing historical sites and scenic views in Italy, Switzerland, France, England, and unidentified countries. The images were taken ca 1950s by unidentified photographers. Some slides have captions written on paper affixed to the glass, that describe the location and subject. The images include: - Buildings and ruins in Rome and the Vatican City, such as St Peter's Basilica, the Colosseum, and the Roman Forum. Two images of a middle-aged woman, probably a companion of the photographer, standing in the streets (she also appears in image of Lake Garda). - Notable places in other Italian cities, including the basilica in Assisi, the Mausoleum of Theodica in Ravenna, the Ponte de Vecchio in Florence, and Genoa Harbour. Also buildings in Venice, including the Rialto, St Mark's Basilica, and the Palazzo Ducale. Six of the images of Venice are in colour. - Scenes among the ruins of Pompeii, including the forum and the House of the Faun. - Two street scenes in the Swiss town of Gruyeres; grape vines near Geneva; and two images of the river running through the French town of Annecy, one showing the Palais de l'Isle. - The front gate of Hampton Court, near London. Officers and personnel of the 9th NZ Infantry Brigade and of the 6th NZ Infantry Brigade at Trieste; thanksgiving service on the occasion of the end of war in Europe, and presentation of awards by Lt-Gen Sir B C Freyberg. Group portraits of No 1 & No 2 Platoons of Mechanical Equipment Company of New Zealand Divisional Engineers; various sports and entertainments including a trotting meeting at Montebello, Trieste; swimming regatta; athletics; hurdles; yacht race; skiing and staying at the NZ Alpine leave centre at Madonna di Campiglio, in the Brenta di Dolomiti (Southern Dolomites); sports in Florence (Allied track and field championships); swimming championships at Rome; water polo; motor cycle speedway events and rugby.
