It is the one tourists are taken to see and a notice at the foot of it says: This tree is 43 feet in girth + 42 feet to the first branch. Description: Shows an abstract interpretation of Tane Mahuta within surrounding forest. The giant kauri stands imposingly at the front, represented in black and other dark colours, with the texture, light and shadow of the forest represented by the various fabrics used Steven regarded this work as a collaboration with the Maori artist Heni Sherratt, who designed the patterned fabric in the collage. The two met while Steven was teaching art to Maori children on the East Coast in the late 1940s. When she went to London in 1951 Steven was invited to participate in the Ascher Award at the Tate Gallery, and contributed this collage to the exhibiton. Inscriptions: Recto - bottom right - A.M. Description: Kauri seed laid on kauri wood, female and male kauri cones, and Tane Mahuta (giant kauri tree in the Waipoua Kauri Forest). A view of the Waimate North Mission Station Church; three views of a ginkgo biloba tree at the home of John Gilkison at Cambridge; three images taken at the home of Merta Alford (Harriet Mercy Alford) at Taotaoroa showing Sir Michael and Lady Inagh Parsons, visiting New Zealand. The last five images show scenes at a waterlily garden. Marked as being at Waitoa by Rhoda McWhannell, but possibly the Waihi Waterlily Gardens. Description: Transparencies of Northland, circa December 1962 and 1968. Many of the photographs are likely taken by Evelyn Hare. Most slides have captions identifying places, people, and in some cases dates. Northland scenes include boat 'Kewpie', Kerikeri Stone Store, Awanui Hotel, Whangarei heads, Urquhart Bay, Tutukaka Bay, Sandy Bay, a Kaikohe street scene, Ōpononi Hotel, and Hokianga Heads. Hare appears in photograph with kauri tree Tāne Māhuta. Other photographs show the bridal party and guests at an unidentified wedding, a gravestone, and a building.
