Toa Rangatira (Porirua, N.Z.)

Toa Rangatira is the second whare tupuna to bear this name at Takapuwahia, Porirua. Built and erected in 1900 the house was carved by Piwiki Horohau of Ngati Raukawa and assisted by members of the Ngati Toa of Porirua. It was dedicated and opened by Te Mahutu-te-Toko of Ngati Maniapoto (Waikato), who was immortalised the song "Ka eke ki Wairaka", by Rihi Puhiwahine, also of Ngati Toa descent. The present house "Toa Rangatira" is the third generation erected by the Ngati Toa people at Takapuwahia.
