Creator unknown: Portable printing press and copy book

Description: Object made up of a Mordon & Co. portable copying press and a copy book. The press includes the cover with cast iron clasps, instructions for use, the copy book, Zuccato papyrographic paper and board required to make copies. The previous owner, artist Benjamin Aylett Branfill, has written his name on the inside cover of both the press and copy book. The book contains copied correspondence of Colonel Branfill, which date from 20 January 1880 to 12 December 1880. Letters are addressed to his wife, children and business contacts. Much of his writing appears to be on the subject of Christianity and the Bible. Title supplied by Library. Description: `Gestetner' Neo-Cyclostyle duplicating apparatus in varnished wooden box with hinged lid. Many printing accessaries are inside the compartmentalised box, including: wooden ink steel nibbed pen inside cardboard box covered with red paper; blue ink in an aluminium tube inside red box covered with red paper; Neocyclostyle pen in cardboard box; Gestetner stencil paraffin wax papers inside cardboard folder; rubber roller with wooden handle and metal compartments; black plastic pen with steel core/nib; large number of aluminium printing blocks; two large wooden inking/printing boards with waxy paper in one of them. Description: Papers, and various objects relating to the activities of the Chee Kung Tong (CKT) and Chinese in Wellington. The collection includes items from the Chee Kung Tong, from the Chung's shop, and from the Chung family. Collection includes banners and flags; divining sticks; boxed candles; uniforms worn by members of an orchestra; stringed and wooden musical instruments; percussion instruments used by the orchestra; and printing blocks and an ink grinder likely used in the Chung's shop. Also includes photographic prints of Chinese in Wellington and Chee Kung Tong, and copy negatives and photocopies of prints made by the Library from originals belonging to the donor of the collection. For further information about the CKT and this collection consult the publication that accompanied an Alexander Turnbull Library exhibition on the CKT: `Chee Kung Tong: The Hung League in New Zealand', 1991. A copy is held in the collection backfile. Doris Chung's husband, Chung Dick Lee, was the last president of the New Zealand Chee Kung Tong.
