Description: Contains general subject files including papers relating to campaigns, tours, conferences, relationship with other anti-apartheid groups, race relations, liberation movements and dealings with other organisations. Also includes organisational material including correspondence, minutes, correspondence with government, financial reports, publications, clippings and ephemera. Also contains copies, mock-ups and correspondence relating to the first three issues of HART Report produced by Dick Cuthbert in 1992. These reports contain clippings of articles and similar material relating to the situation in South Africa. Source of title - Supplied title Halt All Racist Tours (HART) was established in 1969 to protest against New Zealand' participation in rugby union tours to and from South Africa while that nation operated under an apartheid regime. Intially set up to protest the 1970 tour of South Africa by the All Blacks, HART grew to become a leading national anti-apartheid organisation. The early focus of activity was the sports boycott of South Africa. In later years HART advocated ceasation of all contact with apartheid South Africa. In 1980 HART merged with the National Anti-Apartheid Committee, becoming HART: the New Zealand Anti-Apartheid Movement. At a later stage, a name in use for the organisation was HART Aotearoa. Description: The papers relate to Luxford's career as an actress, 1920s-1930s, and later as a print and radio journalist, 1930s-1950s, as well as material on the ANZAC Club, the ANZAC Memorial Garden in New York, ANZAC Hour broadcasts, ANZAC Day commemorations and the British American Ambulance Corps, all of which she was involved with during WWII. Further material relates to Luxford's work with the fashion shows at Hotel Pierre, New York in the 1950s. There are also papers on her work with volunteer and charitable organisations from the 1940s, including certificates awarded to her. In 1996 Luxford's diaries and note books, and a collection of letters from the author Zane Grey, were added to the collection. In 1998, further diaries, newspaper cuttings and correspondence relating mainly to Nola's private and domestic life were donated by Ms Carole van Grondelle, who was using them as source material for her biography. Description: Reminiscences of early days in Marlborough written in 1857; copies of verse and satire by the family; copy of letter and verse by Henry Harper on Martha Adam's death, plan of family home, Redwood; biographical details from the Cyclopedia of New Zealand and newspaper clippings concerning her husband and eldest son; and sketches she made as a girl in England. Describes her English childhood, marriage to William Adams in 1840 and emigration to Nelson 1850. She describes the `mud hovel' in which the Adams family first lived when taking up a Marlborough run in 1852, and recalls the islolated life which at times found her coping alone with house and farm work, sick children, food shortages and vagrants. Description: Cowan's papers consisting of research notes and drafts, correspondence, transcripts and clippings. Topics cover Cowan's research and writing interests including Maori, military and settler history, New Zealand Wars and tourism related topics. See also James Cowan Papers MS-Papers-0039 for a previous acquisition of James Cowan papers; and ATL-Group-00003 for a collection purchased from the Cowan Family in 2015. Arrangement: The folders are generally ordered as they were received from the auction house. James Cowan was a writer, historian and journalist prominent in the first four decades of the twentieth century. He wrote over 30 books and hundreds of articles for newspapers and magazines, mainly about New Zealand's ancient and recent past, its resources and scenic attractions. He made a significant contribution to the popular understanding of New Zealand history over this period. Cowan was a fluent Maori speaker and an early proponent of using oral histories to record historic evidence. He was married twice, the second time to Eileen Constance Stowell who was the daughter of the noted Maori scholar and translator Henry Stowell (Hare Hongi). Cowan died 6 Sep 1943 at Otaki Beach. Artist unknown but two of them say 'after Linley Richardson' who was a well-known artist in New Zealand in the early 1900s. Some newspaper and magazine clippings were present with these drawings including nude images, that the artist may have used when drawing these drawings. Description: The collection comprises Strewe's correspondence with his family in Germany (much of this is in German), his New Zealand family and friends. It also includes papers relating to his Somes Island internment, his work as a lansdscape gardener and architect, tapes and transcripts of interviews with Frank Sargeson, poetry, articles, short stories, journals, a film project for the Australian Film Commission with Marsha Bennett and other material. Language - Most of the family correspondence between Strewe and his family in Germany is in German; clippings and articles and other papers also in German Source of title - Supplied Strewe left Germany late in 1937 and arrived in New Zealand via Canada, Hawaii and Fiji in 1938. He was interned on Somes Island from 1941 to 1946 and worked as a journalist following his release. He was a member of Orini and Riverside communes (1947-1949), studied and then practised landscape architecture. From 1949 to 1969 he lived and worked in Auckland. Around 1972 he moved to Australia. Includes 23 diaries recording Rhoda McWhannell's daily appointments and her observations on the weather, dated 1964-1986. Also includes 62 journals containing more detailed comments on McWhannell's activities and current news from 1938-1986, interspersed with cartoons, clippings, quotations, stamps, photographs, and other items. Also includes four journals recording trips to Italy, the United Kingdom, and South Africa; two books of quotations and extracts; a folder of newspaper clippings, cartoons, a greeting card and a photograph; and a parcel of thirteen letters to Mr and Mrs Butler from McWhannell and others. Also includes 31 photograph albums, loose photographs, transparencies and negatives taken by Rhoda and Frederick McWhannell and others from circa 1890s to 1980s.
