Watt, James Norwood, 1928-2018: Collection
Date: [circa 1890s]-1990s
By: Watt, James Norwood, 1928-2018
Reference: ATL-Group-00175
Description: Collection comprises mainly colour transparencies taken in the 1980s by James (Jim) Norwood Watt of bird-watching and sailing expeditions. It also contains a photograph album and prints relating to Watt's World War Two service in Japan from 1946 to 1948, photographs and transparencies of Whangamata between 1912 and the 1990s (including Watt’s housing development at Moana Point, community events, and beach scenes), scenes from Watt’s holidays around New Zealand, and further yachting photographs. Collection also includes some photographic negatives. 'Totorore' expedition photographs are primarily of birdlife and bird habitats in Chile, July to October 1983. Also featured in these photographs are expedition members, sailing scenes, nautical charts, Chilean life (cities and towns, buildings, street scenes, fishermen, etc.), and geography (glaciers, mountains, islands, etc.). Some photographs were taken when Watt left the expedition and travelled around Chile on his own, circa October to December 1983. Set also includes images of the 'Totorore' under construction in Kerikeri in 1982, as well as black and white negative sets of Guafo Island and Punta Arenas. Two reports on this, and another expedition made by the 'Totorore' to the Auckland and Antipodes Islands, are included. Also covered is a World Wildlife Fund New Zealand expedition to the Chatham Islands in December 1984. These images focus on the Chatham Island taiko, habitats, expedition members and the WWFNZ hut at which they stayed, Chatham Island scenery and buildings, and equipment used by the expedition (including sound recorders). Some images show birds being tagged, The third major set of photographs covers Watt's solo circumnavigation of New Zealand in February to May 1989. These transparencies include images of scenery, birdlife, yachting scenes, and coastal towns Watt visited. The majority of images are of Fiordland but other locations include Bluff (mainly the port), Akaroa, Stewart Island, and White Island. Further New Zealand yachting photographs show Friedensreich Hundertwasser's yacht 'Regentag', the construction of Watt's yacht 'Matariki', and various sailing trips made on the 'Matariki' including the Round North Island Two-Handed Yacht Race. Whangamata and Waikato Region photographs feature Watt's Moana Point subdivision and associated road works and bridge building. Further local scenes include visiting elephant seal 'Humphrey', children’s BMX racing, bowling, flooding, rose shows, Mystery Creek fieldays, and beach scenes. Photographs relating to Watt's World War Two service in Japan during the British Commonwealth Military Occupation of Japan are a photograph album of local and military scenes and a group portrait of soldiers in the 22nd New Zealand Battalion. Accompanying material - Donor's notes on the 'Matariki' voyage and Whangamata family history, as well as Photograph Archive Curator Natalie Marshall's notes on the collection (made during discussion with donor during the acquisition process) are held in the Library backfile. Title supplied by Library. Quantity: 2213 colour original transparency/ies. 115 colour original photographic print(s). 34 b&w original negative(s) strips containing 102 images. 33 colour original negative(s) strips. 31 b&w original photographic print(s). 3 colour photo-mechanical print(s). 2 map(s) one on five microfiche. 2 folder(s). 2 album(s). Physical Description: Photographic materials, mss, typescripts Provenance: Donated by James (Jim) Watt, Brisbane, Australia, 2013, 2014, 2015, and 2016. Transfers: Negatives from accession PH-2015-124 described at 33mm-101258 to 101292. - Negatives from accession 2016-0584 described at 35mm-103819 to 35mm-103851.. Processing information: The original reference number assigned to the collection, PA-Group-00954, was changed to ATL-Group-00175 in September 2017. At this time, the title of the collection was also changed from "Photographs and papers relating to Totorore expedition" to its current title. Transparencies were removed from original housing and placed in archival enclosures. If the accompanying information was unable to be placed in an enclosure (i.e. was written on a plastic slide container), this information was transcribed by the Librarian and placed in sequence with the appropriate material. Subject authorities used at child level records relating to bird watching generally use the vernacular name for the bird genus (i.e. swans rather than cygnus). For instance, if there is an image of a black-necked swan, the subject heading used is "Swans". In some cases, where a particular bird is prominent in the collection, and is the only subgenus from that particular family to be used, the vernacular names for subgenus is used as a subject heading (i.e. Magellanic penguins). In the Scope and Contents note, the name of the specific species, as captioned by Watt on the slide, is used. Watt's use sometimes differs from the preferred vernacular term on Library of Congress (i.e. Watt uses narrow-billed prion instead of slender-billed prion).
