Ngāti Mahanga

The hapu is Ngati Mahanga Hourua o Tainui, situated along the Waikato west coast from Aotea harbour to Raglan harbour between the west coast and Pirongia - Purakau ranges up to Ngati Mahuta. (Reference Leslie Kelly, `Tainui'). Ngati Mahanga marae include Te Papaorotu (Reference, Waikato Raupatu Lands Trust, 2005).

Description: Contains notes about places associated with Kupe in Wellington and Wairarapa, whakapapa, financial records by Tuta Nihoniho and miscellaneous notes about land management There is a lengthy account of the destruction of the Te Arawa canoe by Raumati, and subsequent events, and a related narrative about Raumati's son, Ngarue and his activites and family There are haka and waiata, a list of pa in Taranaki and related iwi, notes about the origins and settlements of various iwi, notes about greenstone, and a narrative about conflicts between Te Ati Awa and Waikato, and the subsequent migration of Te Ati Awa along with Ngati Raukawa and Ngati Toa to the Wellington area There are notes about the arrival of Pakeha in New Zealand before Captain Cook, and a note in Elsdon Best's hand that states that much of the information in the manuscript was extracted from the Journal of the Polynesian Society and other published sources Also contains the names of several muskets belonging to the Ngati Toa which were named in a waiata composed by the wife of Te Pukoro, a Ngati Tama/ Ati Awa chief killed in the Wairarapa in the late 1820s. Programme, Maori race meeting, Karioi, January 1st, 1870. Come! Come! Come! Notice to a...

Description: An arrangement of text announcing a race meeting under the patronage of the Maori King, with a panel illustrating a Maori carved panel down the left side. The text lists the stewards of the race, and the rules of the race. Stewards included chairman Te Wheoro and friends, judge Te Tahuna and friends, starter Te Harihari and friends, clerks of the course P Wanihi and Te Amaru, clerk of scales Te Kamanomano, handicapper Tom Pepa & wife, treasurer the Rev Hori Wirihani, and secretary Mrs Harihari. Rules included a ban on alcohol and drunkenness, a ban on girls riding as jockeys, a ban on interference with other jockeys during the race. The horse's name could not be changed nor previous wins suppressed. Those attending the races were forbidden to abuse or swear at the stewards and jockeys. Because of the red stamp on the verso, acknowledging the Alexander Turnbull Library, this is thought to be a reprint from the photograph held at 1/1-00855-F.
