Description: Frontal portrait of Goldie as a small child. He is shown standing, dressed in elaboratey-decorated clothes, and sucking a drink through a straw. The sketch has been clipped out of a letter, probably written from Paris to Grace Hesketh Most probably drawn in or around 1898 when Goldie was in Paris. Compare three very similar drawings at A-252-010, A-252-011 and A-252-012, two of which form part of letters written from Paris. This letter has an imprint on the edge on the back 'Bellavoine Jeune Paris' Quantity: 1 drawing(s). It formed the lower portion of the central pillar supporting the roof of Rangihaeata's house on Mana Island, the house being known as Kaitangata. Description: A set of vignettes concerning current political and social matters in Christchurch and beyond. 'Music hath charms' shows the Salvation Army band 'leading a mutiny against the City Council' while they play loudly outside the Christchurch City Council buildings. A drunk man, seen in Dunedin, carries a large sandwich board 'Prohibition a blunder'. A cricket player getting bowled relates to 'South African cricketers' against the Australians in their 5th test. A London professor snoozes under a tree, after stating that 'the sun could do all world's work'. Two small boys, one with an executioner's axe, his dead parents behind him, discuss the murder of the parents after his mother refused to give him a penny to buy lollies. Relates to a newspaper account of a boy in Dunedin reacting violently to strict parents, including his trying to hang himself. A self portrait shows Low sobbing into his handkerchief, while he draws Tommy Taylor, but regrets the ending of the political life of Joseph Ward and William Massey for caricature purposes. Councillor Thacker pulling up a tree from Cathedral Square in the process of transplanting it rather that cutting it down. A confrontation between Britain and Kaiser Bill is about importing goods between the two countries. Description: A photograph of an original watercolour by H G Robley; this watercolour was the basis for "War dance of the Ngaiterangi. Native games at Te Papa Camp, Tauranga, New Zealand, [1865] ..." reproduced in the Illustrated London news, v 48 (1866), page 417. A large group of Maori men performing a haka, shown at a moment of leaping in the air. They are carrying a mixture of muskets and spears, and dressed in mixed European and Maori clothing. They are observed by a group of European and Maori men and women, with the artist's self portrait sketching near the centre in the foreground. In the background are low hills of Tauranga with several European buildings and a few military tents.
