In 1918 Hutt Girls' School Ltd established an Anglican private school for girls, Chilton St James School, in Lower Hutt. When the Chilton House School closed in 1930, Chilton St James School purchased their goodwill, and incorporating the name into the school. Description: The labour registers give the number and name of the labourer, his or her village and district. The registers also note the plantation on which the labourer worked and transfers to employment elsewhere. If applicable, the date and cause of death is noted (there was a high mortality). Otherwise the register notes the date of return. There is also a column for further notes. The register numbers run from 6367 to 10128 (25 May 1887-Jan 1906) and from 1238-3187 (Jan 1906-Sep 1913). Source of title - Transcribed from item The Copra trade was the core business of the Deutsches Handel und Plantagen Gesellschaft, which had monopoly recruiting rights enabling it to draw labour for its plantations in Samoa from the eastern New Guinea islands and the northern Solomon Islands. Isaac Clark and Son was established as a building firm in 1885 in Wingfield Street, Thorndon (which used to run between where the State Services Commission and the National Library of New Zealand are now); they then moved to a site at 87 The Terrace near the present Lambton Square Arcade, opposite Aurora Terrace, then to the corner of Willis and Aro Streets where Lychgate is now. As they already had a good joinery business and were making caskets for other funeral directors, they decided to expand into that business in 1900.
