Description: Collection comprises photographic prints, negatives, and transparencies, including mounted slides, with some prints mounted in albums, and manuscript papers including newspaper clippings, periodical articles, and papers relating to Kathleen Hancock's research and journalism work from the period 1955 to 2004. Photographs document visits to various islands as both a journalist and for leisure travel to American Samoa, Bali, Cook Islands, Fiji, French Polynesia, Hawaii and California, Nauru, New Caledonia, Niue, Norfolk Island, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tasmania, Tonga, and Vanuatu. Some photographs also document family gatherings and other occasions in New Zealand. As a journalist Hancock attended meetings of the South Pacific Commission and photographed delegates on these occasions. The collection documents people, the natural and built environment, tourism infrastructure and facilities, transport and accommodation, culture and performing arts. Colour mounted slides document destinations visited by Kathleen Hancock during the period 1968 to 1988. The papers in the collection represent Hancock's work as both a journalist and author, including working material from the two biographical books: 'Sir Albert Henry: His Life and Times' (Auckland: Methuen, 1979), and 'Men of Mana' (Wellington: Steele Roberts, 2003). Some photographic materials show evidence of having been salvaged from a fire, circa 1999. Description: Contains a logbook kept by R F Gambier a midshipsman aboard the `HMS Dauntless', commanded by Captain George C Gambier. The log book records the voyage to the Pacific or `South Seas' in 1821-1822, with details of weather conditions encountered. There are also details of landings throughout the Pacific including Huahini, Tahiti. Also included is a night order book kept by RF Gambier while he was commander aboard the `HMS Satellite' and the `HMS Sappho' for voyages aimed at suppressing the slave trade around Africa during the 1840s.
