Description: Records comprise school log books 1929-1967, pupil registers for Vogeltown and Brooklyn schools 1883-1969, minutes of staff meetings 1957-1967, School Centennial Committee minutes 1982-1983, historical notes and correspondence, 1983, registration cards for Brooklyn School Reunion, and large number of class and historic photographs (photocopies). Original photocopies have been transferred to Photographic Archive. Native school attendance books

Description: Attendance rolls generally kept by native school teachers, though there is evidence of William Colenso's hand in some of them. Earliest register (1844) is for the school at Waimate, Northland; the remaining books relate to schools in the Wairarapa district. It is noteworthy that both Mohi Torohanga and Paratene Te Okawhare are listed as pupils at the schools; they are the source of the text scribed by Te Whatahoro and subsequently used by S P Smith in writing about Maori cosmology and origins (See JPS 103 no 2); other notable pupils include Te Horo and Paora Te Potangaroa who both established prophetic movements (see Elsmore, B 1989 Mana from Heaven) There is a note on one of the books in Elsdon Best's hand. Description: Material compiled by Oroya Day, containing biographical information and ephemera about Melvin Day, covering the period 1929 to 1957. Includes school reports, awards, certificates, and prizes, correspondence, newsclippings, a watercolour artwork, testimonials, material relating to war service (including photographic prints), photographs, articles, material relating to the annual Rotorua Society of Arts Exhibition, copies of notebook and diary entries, material relating to teaching career, catalogues, booklets, a guarantee for a watch which was given to Mrs Day in 1954, original artwork for a New Zealand Chinese cookbook and a copy of the book. Title taken from original enclosure. Arrangement: The contents of this item were received by the Library in a ringbinder containing clear plastic sleeves; the order of the material in the ringbinder has been retained. Quantity: 1 box(es) containing 18 folders.. Transfers: The contents of MS-Papers-12414-01 and MS-Papers-12414-02 were originally received in one ringbinder.. Processing information: The contents of each plastic sleeve have been rehoused into archival folders, one per sleeve, and the label information on the sleeves has been transcribed onto the folders. The sleeves have been disposed of. Within the folder photographic prints have been placed in photographic enclosures and left in situ. Negatives have been separated for preservation purposes. A separation sheet has been left in the folder indicating the reference number for the negatives.

Description: Shirley Smith received most of her schooling at Queen Margaret College, Wellington and Nga Tawa, Marton. She was a student at St Hugh's College, Oxford, 1935-1939. Between 1941-1944 she was a lecturer in Classics at Wellington and Auckland university colleges and lectured on constitutional and Roman law at Victoria University College, 1958-1960. The series contains stories, school exercise books and reports from her school days, notes she made on clasical studies while a student at Oxford University and for the various lectureships she held in New Zealand. Also includes correspondence relating to this period, in particular correspondence written while she was at Oxford University.
