Mangaore Power Station (N.Z.)

Power station for the Mangahao Hydroelectric Power Scheme, built on the Mangaore Stream in the Tararua Ranges, in the North Island of New Zealand. Utilises water from dams on the Mangahao River, Arapeti Stream and Tokomaru Stream. Construction began in 1919 and the power station was commissioned in 1924. It was the first of many large hydroelectric power stations to be built in New Zealand under a Government-resourced plan to provide a national supply of electricity.

Description: Album (1), 1916-1921. Tararuas and Mangahao Hydroelectric power construction (images 1-58). See also Album (2), 1921-1922, Mangahao Hydroelectric Power Scheme (images 59-122), at PA1-q-001. Black and white photographs of various areas in the Tararua Range, including views of the high peaks, the Mangaore Stream, the Horowhenua lowland area from the ridge leading up to Te Paki trig station, the Arapeti Valley from the site of the future Tokomaru Dam (part of the Mangahao Hydroelectric scheme), and the remnants of the Shannon Land & Sawmilling Company sawmill in the Arapeti Valley. Views of a waterfall on the Tokomaru River which was submerged when the dam was completed; views of the jig tramway which connected the terminus of the service road with the bottom of the Mangahao Valley (450 ft descent, approximately 1 in 2 grade); sinking a shaft to test rock formation preparatory to construction of the power scheme.

Description: Photographs of trips taken in the countryside, of bridges, rivers, streams, waterfalls, native forest, mountains, coastal scenery and other scenic views. There are pictures of cars and one of a motorcycle with side car. There are prints of two fly fishermen displaying their catch in a net and of a man holding up a large eel. Others show yachts in sail, and men and boys in yachts; adult fun sports at a group outing identified in PAColl-6712-2 as being the "optic championships". Another group are shown playing cricket in the grounds of Days Bay House. There is also a single print of a hunter showing his bag of wild game birds. Animals are represented by cattle and horses, one of the latter associated with two men and a wagon-full of freshly harvested hay, another is harnessed to a coach parked beside a stationary train. A sequence of prints records the dams and lakes of the newly completed Mangahao Hydro in the hills inland from Shannon. Three prints show a ship grounded in coastal shallows. There are portrait and group photographs of people, including children, and one print of a children's party. Several show picnic groups.

Hydro scheme images feature: construction, unidentifided workers, and work camp housing at the Waitaki Hydro-Electric Scheme (1930); construction of the Coffer Dam, including draught tubes and turbines; Arapeti Dam and surrounding forest; interior and exterior shots of the completed Mangahao Power Station (1933) with one unidentified worker and partially submerged trees; houses, tents, roads, drafting room at district office, and surge chamber at Mangaore-Waikaremoana Power System, Shannon, with W B King identified and Thomson at work; and the power station at Lake Coleridge. Description: Unbound photograph album and pages comprises photographs of hydroelectric power and electricity transmission, probably taken by Laurence Earle from 1926 to1928. Photographs are mainly of completed and under construction work for hydroelectric dams and electricity pylons (known at the time as 'towers').The album also contains photographs of powerhouses around the North Island, scenic images taken on location, and worker's campsites. Images of fieldwork include in-construction and erection of electricity towers at Hobsonville, East Tamaki, Greenhithe, Penrose-Takapuna, Panmure and Bombay; as well as cabling installation, bullock teams, survey equipment, construction equipment and dredging machinery. Hydroelectric dam images feature pipelines, dam spillways, dam walls and turbines. Photographs with interior and/or exterior views of powerhouses include the Waikaremoana power scheme, the Arapuni Dam, and Penrose substation. Scenic landscape views include Rangiriri swamp, Waihi, Waiau river and gorge, Mangaore and Poutere lake. Most photographs have accompanying caption inscriptions, ranging from 1926 to 1928, which describe locations, structures, campsites, and bridges. Some photographs feature workers at campsites, or working on tower construction and/or undertaking fieldwork.
