Description: Papers relating to the life and career of Sir Apirana Ngata His papers reflect his wide involvement in many areas of Māori life. They include correspondence (personal and official), reports, administrative files, papers relating to his Parliamentary career and his involvement in local issues and concerns. Subject areas include loan development schemes, instructions on sheepfarming, park boards, records of various stations, the School of Māori Arts, constituency matters, land blocks, meeting houses and marae, the Māori Battalion and similar topics. These separate holdings include (i) Extensive correspondence between Ngata and Sir Peter Buck and other Ngata papers included in the Eric Ramsden papers (MS-Papers-0196) (ii) Ngata's correspondence on ethnological matters and his correspondence and working notes for `Ngā Mōteatea' held as part of the New Zealand Māori Purposes Fund Board papers (MS-Papers-0189) (iii) Microfilm of Ngata family Ngāti Porou research material provided to the Library for copying by Mr Amster Reedy on behalf of the Ngata family (iv) other smaller collections from various sources including a 1897-1899 letterbook and family correspondence recently purchased by the Library (MS-Group-0903). Arrangement: The papers have been well looked after prior to coming to the Library, but most were not in any filing system, apart from one major sequence of papers, mainly from the 1940s, in a numerical registration sequence (series 2). This series has been maintained. The remaining papers have been grouped into series broadly relating to Ngata's major activities. Researchers need to be aware that other papers relating to these activities will also be found in series 2. The date range of materials falls outside Ngata's own life time because the collection has been added to over the years. Sir Apirana Ngata was one of the most influential Māori leaders of the twentieth century. He was a lawyer and politician who was elected to Parliament as the member for Eastern Māori, retaining his seat until 1943. He took a leading role in fostering Māori land development and a revival of traditional Māori culture, as well as an active interest in local Māori affairs, education, health, incorporation, agriculture and other concerns. Description: The papers consist of: Application form submitted by Roger James Cotton; land documents; history of family and property (including `Cotton family' from printed publication (p524)); photographs The original owner of the land in Waipori District (formerly Tuapeka County) was Thomas Dickson who was granted 15 acres by the Crown in 1872. He died in 1873 and the land passed to his widow Margaret (nee Atkinson) who remarried Robert Cotton in 1875. The land was transferred to Robert Cotton in 1891. At the time of the New Zealand Century Farm and Station award in 2005 the farm was owned jointly by brothers Roger James and Stuart William Cotton (great-grandsons of Robert Cotton). Description: Printed by Geddis & Blomfield, 1901. The book is annotated and also includes some loose material that was laid in to the volume, including clippings (some annotated), research notes, drafts, drawings, correspondence, and photographic prints. The loose papers are dated circa 1930s-1940 and mostly relate to the Rotorua and Taupō regions. The correspondence includes one page of a letter from Alfred Warbrick, of Whakarewarewa, written 31 October 1933, relating to a 'stone image' [carving?] at Matuatonga which had previously been taken to Ohinemutu, but had since been returned to Matuatonga on Mokoia Island. The correspondence also includes a copy of a typewritten letter by [?] R. Mair which refers to an excerpt of a letter by Gilbert Mair, dated 27 July 1905, relating to Te Porere Pā (also included in this folder). The clippings include an article by James Cowan that was published in the New Zealand Railways Magazine, 1 June 1931 'Lakeland and Storyland: The charm of a Rotorua cruise'. The drawings comprise an ink drawing by Eileen Cowan of Ngauruhoe erupting, and another ink drawing (probably also by Eileen Cowan) of the Haere-huka Rapids, Waikato River. The photographs are of Gilbert Mair's grave, Mokoia Island, and a very small photograph of two people climbing Mount Ngauruhoe. The drafts include a translation of a waiata 'Tangi for Mokoia' which has an annotation which says that it was translated by "J. Cowan" in 1896. Quantity: 1 volume(s). 1 folder(s). Description: The series titles below give a good indication of the scope of the collection but special mention should be made of the large series of inward letters (Series One) which contains letters not only from local and national political figures but also from his farm manager, local churchmen, teachers, his children, suffragists and others seeking his patronage. Source of title - Supplied title Hall arrived in Canterbury in 1852 and was a member of the Canterbury Provincial Council for most of the period up to the abolition of the provinces in 1876. He was also a magistrate, a commissioner of police and Mayor of Christchurch at varying times during this period. He was called to the Legislative Council in 1863 but resigned in 1866. He represented Heathcote in Parliament and was Postmaster General in the Stafford Ministry. In 1879, while representing Selwyn, he became Premier. He resigned in 1882 and was knighted in the same year. He was a strong supporter of women suffrage and was instrumental in ensuring the success of that legislation. He left Parliament in Nov 1893. Description: These papers relate to Rev Percy Hall's period as a London Missionary Society missionary in the Cook Islands in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. Includes an extensive collection of inward correspondence; a collection of printed material, much by the mission press in Rarotonga; samples of school work; and some early newspapers, serials, maps and photographs, covering his period in the Cook Islands. Also includes writings in Cook Islands Maori written by students at the mission and also collected by Percy Hall and by his predecessor, John J K Hutchin. Much of this material has been transcribed by Bob O'Brien and the transcriptions are available on the New Zealand Electronic Text Centre website (http://www.nzetc.org) Language - Cook Island Maori Relationship complexity - A purchase from Bethune's Auction in June 1987 of Tereora School children's work illustrating legends and customs of Cook Island Maoris, gives some samples from the 1960s and 1970s. This is to be found at 88-22-42 in Drawings and Prints Section Percy Hall, a trained teacher, was appointed headmaster of Tereora Boarding School in Rarotonga in Jul 1900. In 1905 he returned to England where he trained at the London Missionary School Hackney College in theology and was ordained in 1908. From Feb 1908 he worked in Rarotonga, being appointed to the training institution at Avarua in 1916, when he left Rarotonga for New Zealand and resigned from the London Missionary Society.
