Description: Administration records of the court, judgements of the criminal tribunal at Port Vila, decrees and decisions of the Court President; conferences and proceedings; Correspondence in English and French. Source of title - Transcribed Relationship complexity - See also Micro-MS-Coll-08-1145 The Joint Court of the New Hebrides was set up in 1906 under the Condominion of France and Great Britain. The court consisted of a judge from each of the powers under a neutral president, appointed by the King of Spain. The President also appointed the other court officials. Civil and criminal suits between Europeans were tried in the national court of the defendant or accused. The Joint Court tried land cases and civil and criminal cases between Ni-Vanuatua or between Ni-Vanuatua and Europeans, as well as offences against the Convention of the Condominion. Description: Comprises diary or report of a surveying expedition 27 Oct-21 Dec (nd) which left Nelson for the Marlborough Sounds via the Boulder Bank, Croiselles, Anakiwa, the Rai and Whangamoa in which Paske (presumably the writer) mentions meeting settlers and local Maori, food collected and eaten (including fuschia berries), records the death of Simon (a Maori) and the Maori reaction to it and other details. Letters from Lucy Jervois, possibly Paske's aunt, to her sister and brother re Paske's death (12 Jun 1886), and to her sister-in-law Amelia re same (19 Jun 1886); letter from Mr Jervois probably to Paske (snr). Includes court record re Paske being intestate. Also contains `Report on the surveys of New Zealand 1885-1886', by James McKerrow, referring to the death of Paske on a surveying expedition.
