Description: A photographic scrapbook album relating to the Simpson family containing images taken between circa 1885 and circa 1989 by a range of photographers. Also contains family memorabilia. Images and items are captioned, probably in the hand of Cecilia Mary (Bebe) Simpson (née O'Shea). The cover bears an annotated note 'Graingers - Mel & Win, Young Alan, Pop O'Shea - Bebe & Joy, wedding ph., Ngatoki, Rangitoto, mish-mash of family'. The album appears to have been created by Cecilia Mary for her son Shane Simpson, and contains sets of images relating to Shane's paternal and maternal lines. The first set of images relates to the family of Gordon Alan Simpson, and mainly shows his parents Montague Melrose (Mel) Simpson and Winifred (Win) Bertha Evelyn (née Grainger). Other images of notes include: the Grainger family outside their home 'The Hermitage' at Norfolk street, Ponsonby, Auckland; Mel and Win on their honeymoon; Mel in army uniform during World War One; 'Highbury' the Hammond family home in Birkenhead; family holidays in caravans and tents; and family group portraits of Mel and Win with Gordon Alan and his siblings Keith John, Tracey, Roy. Includes Win's Post Office savings book dated 1915. One set of images relates to Gordon Alan Simpson as he grew up, and shows him as a child and young man. Images of note include: Gordon Alan in Wadestown Primary school class portraits for 1930 and 1933; secondary school class portraits; Gordon Alan in the Wairapapa College pipe band; street portraits of Gordon Alan and Mel Simpson, and Gordon Alan with friend Frank Beaufort; the Castor Bay home; formal family portraits of Gordon Alan with his parents and siblings. One set of images relates to Cecilia Mary (Bebe) Simpson and shows her as a child and young woman. Images of note include: family portraits of Bebe with her O'Shea family members at the Apirana Avenue house, notably her grandparents, parents Michael David O'Shea and Bridget Martha (nee Langton), and cousins Win Langton, Sue Langton, Maura Reidy; other family members including Peter Langton, Joy, and Uncle Dan; Bebe as a child holding a kiwi bird; and Bebe as a young woman on holiday, Bebe with Ron W Walker, and Bebe in her debutante dress in 1945. One set of images relates to Shane Simpson, and shows him from baby to boyhood. Images of note include: informal snapshots of Shane with his parents and grandparents, family holidays at baches, Oakura, and Cape Reinga, Shane's first birthday, Christmas at their Wellsford home, baby Shane with crayfish and in a highchair, and Shane at play and at a childrens' costume party; formal portraits of Shane; Shane and his parents on a trip to England 1957-1958; and class portraits showing Shane as the only Pakeha child at a Maori School, and at Hobsonville School in 1960. Some images interspersed through the sets relate to the teaching career of Gordon Alan Simpson and Cecilia Mary (Bebe) Simpson in the far north: Gordon Alan and pupils at his sole charge school at Hakaru, Shane holding a sporting shield sitting below lines of Maori pupils holding a school banner display 'FNCS' and Far Northland place names, a group portrait showing Gordon Alan Simpson, John Bates, Tony Erstitch, Alan Karena, Peta Riki, B Bates, Cecilia Mary (Bebe) Simpson, and R Karena. Includes images related to their rural teaching posts; Te Kao school and houses in 1957, Punaruku school in 1989 (originally lived there in 1951), and the school teacher's house at Ngatoki [circa 1989].
