Description: Album of publicity photographs, and photographs of posters and advertisements taken by unidentified photographers for New Zealand Railways. Many of the images in this album were taken for a series of articles written by Oliver Neal Gillespie between January 1939 and June 1940, published in the New Zealand Railways Magazine. The series was entitled "Buy New Zealand goods and build New Zealand. New Zealand Industries Series". These contribute the largest group of images in the album, covering a wide range of industries. They include men's and women's clothing manufacturers; electrical engineering companies such as Pallo Engineering (petrol pumps), National Engineering (Neeco electric ovens), Standard Engineering Company; tobacco factories; potteries; Nugget shoe polish factory; brushware factories; and companies associated with the manufacture of food products (eg Watties canneries, Edmonds Baking Powder, Griffins and Bycrofts biscuit makers, and Whittome & Stevenson sauce and pickle makers. There are other sequences of images, including newly built state housing in Lower Hutt, with some houses still under construction beside the Hutt River, a streetscape, and a children's playground (p 7-8); a large crowd joining in a send-off of R.S.A. men to Australia in April 1938; a train laden with boxes of oranges from Rarotonga, the "Special orange train from Auckland"; and photographs of charts showing the progress of the New Zealand Government Railways, with railways workshops staff organisation charts (for Otahuhu, Addington, Hutt & Hillside Workshops (p 28-29). On p 35 there are views of a new hangar at Rongotai Aerodrome, under construction, then views of the completed exterior and the interior with a row of Blackburn B-5 Baffin bi-planes. Several images show collection of Railway sports trophies (including cups for their cricket teams), and two views of New Zealand Railways staff member Neil Edwards, a tennis champion who represented New Zealand in Britain in 1939. Description: A programme of entertainment by the Wellington Orchestral Society (conductor J Maughan Barnett), the Wellington Liedertafel (conductor Robert Parker), a song solo from Miss Phoebe Parsons, a display of views by the Wellington Camera Club, banjo selections from Mr Fraser, a piano solo by Mrs Levi, a song solo by Miss N Parsons. In the Government Whip's Room there was to be a display of Rontgen X-rays by Mr R T Turnbull assisted by Mr R C Jones. The inside spread shows a floor plan of the Parliamentary Buildings showing where each entertainment was to take place. The words of the "Singers' Welcome" by Grieg are reproduced on the back page. Description: Reproduction of an early photograph, probably a book illustration, showing the early Provincial Government Buildings (on the site of the present Parliamentary Library), used as Wellington's first Parliament buildings, also used as the Supreme Court, built 1857 and replaced in 1899 by the General Assembly Library. The view is from Molesworth Street. It shows a paling fence running up the hill to the left of the building, which is mostly single-storied, with gable windows along its front facade. Possibly a reversed version of a photograph by G H Swan, 'Provincial Council building, Wellington, ca 1859'. Description: Photographs of construction projects undertaken by Hansford & Mills Construction Company. The most important section consists of views of Parliament Buildings in Wellington, with a large number of images, both exterior and interior. Much of the detail relates to the marble columns and veneer, the marble sourced from the Kairuru Quarry in the Takaka Hills. Interior views show details of various areas, including the Legislative Council Chamber, the House of Representatives, the Maori Committee Room, the lobby for the members' lounge, and marble decoration in the main vestibule, the first floor, and the staircase. There are a number of images of the Kairuru Quarry, showing methods of quarrying the marble, transportation of the marble to Wellington, and machinery used for cutting and shaping the stone once it had arrived in Wellington. One scene also shows the incline at the old quarry at Sandy Bay. Other buildings, all only exterior views, or views of steel construction in early stages, include the State Fire Insurance Building (Featherston Street), Magnus Motors (Wakefield Street), the steelyard in Cable Street, the Ford Building (for Colonial Motor Company), and the Wellington Gas Company buildings, all in Wellington. Also two views of the Christchurch branch of the Wellington Woollen Company.
