Description: A shipboard view of the Santa Cruz coast, Tenerife. Aside from a number of low-level buildings, two windmills and a tall tower can be seen, which is probably the bell tower belonging to the Church of the Immaculate Conception, the first chapel erected by the Spanish conquistadors after landing nearby. The mountains behind the town rise steeply from the coast It is not certain whether the artist visited Tenerife twice on his voyage, or if all the images of the island were done in 1887, as the earlier two are dated Inscriptions: Recto - beneath image - Santa Cruz / from Deck quarantined [in pencil] Quantity: 1 watercolour(s). Description: Two letters to the Bishop of Nancy; that of 11 Feb describing how a broken rudder interrupted their voyage while sailing to his new post in the Pacific, and how the ship managed to reach Santa Cruz, Tenerife for repairs. Describes Santa Cruz, discusses his mission in the Pacific and his appreciation of Forbin-Janson's help. That of 20 Feb announces that rudder now repaired; recommends M Bratillard, the French Consul in the Canaries, for his help. Description: Collection of photographs taken by various photographers including the Burton Brothers, George Valentine, Josiah Martin and Marc Ferrez. On page [67] there is a hand-traced map of the world with a route marked on it from London, to Plymouth, Canary Islands, Cape Town, Tasmania, Wellington, Lyttelton, Cape Horn, Rio de Janeiro, Canary Islands and back to Plymouth and London. The distance travelled out was 12,948 miles, and distance home was 11,915 miles. The photographs cover most of these places, with more detailed travel through Tasmania, and especially New Zealand. Scenes in New Zealand were mostly taken by the Burton Brothers and Josiah Martin. They include views of the main cities, and a large number in the thermal area around Lake Rotorua and Mount Tarawera, showing the area around the Pink and White Terraces before and after the eruption of Mount Tarawera in 1886. Photographs by Josiah Martin include portraits of Maori, and one entitled "The old order changeth" with Maori artifacts, shrunken heads, and a portrait of Tawhiao. Quantity: 1 album(s) Album(s).
