Description: Lantern slides of Africa, including identifiable places and scenes in Egypt, Sudan, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, and South Africa. The images were taken by unidentified photographers, probably in the 1930s. Some slides have captions written on paper affixed to the glass, that describe the location or subject. Seven of the copy images are from a larger numbered sequence of commercial slides. The images include: - Scenes in African villages and rural locations showing: herding of cattle, use of mortar and pestle, streets with dwellings, building of a hut, weaving, drying of crocodile skin, markets, man holding snakes, and people carrying bowls on their heads. - Members of various African tribes, including the Dinka people of Sudan and the Kikuyu people of Kenya (also known as Agikuyu). - Ruins of the ancient city of Great Zimbabwe. - Colonial buildings, including the Maputo Railway Station (Mozambique). - Coconut and other palms, banana, and baobab trees. - Camels being ridden, pulling wagons with barrels, or resting. - Sisal being produced, including stripping and drying of the fibre. - Scenes in Egypt, including the pyramids and the Great Sphinx of Giza, Aswan Dam, the Cairo Museum, streets and buildings of Cairo, and wharfs and boats along the Nile. - The Amphitheatre in the Drakensberg Range in South Africa. Trips to India, Africa and United Nations conference

Description: Contains photographs relating to Catley's trips to India and Africa, and the United Nations Decade for Women conference in Kenya. Some images were probably taken by Catley, others by unknown photographers, ca.1985-1986. Seven b&w images relate to the Tirthraj Milan religious gathering in Allahabad, India (1986), including conference delegates seated en masse outside and shots of religious leader Pandurang Athavale. Also images showing rural and village scenes in India, including meals being eaten and people seated beneath trees. Other images show Somnath Temple on the shoreline at Veraval. Some photographs feature Catley. Most images are double-exposed. Another set of photographs were taken at the 1985 United Nations Decade for Women conference in Nairobi, Kenya, and show groups of women of different nationalities holding meetings, socialising and dining. Individual woman who feature include Ann Hercus, Sonja Davies, Helen Clark and Christine Cole Catley. Also images taken in South Africa, including: domestic scenes of people Catley was visting, with them eating together and talking; scenic views of the Cape of Good Hope and Table Mountain; townships; and school children. Also images taken in Zimbabwe, including: rural scenes with traditional houses or huts; Catley and male friend visiting the Zambezi River and Victoria Falls; and Catley beside the statue of explorer David Livingstone on the Zimbabwe side of the Falls.
