Sarney album 2

Date: [1880s]

From: Sarney, H F (Mr), fl 1959 :Photograph albums of New Zealand scenes

By: Spencer, Charles, 1854-1933

Reference: PA1-q-211

Description: Album of photographs, all taken by Charles Spencer, in the Rotorua District around Mount Tarawera before and after the volcanic eruption of June 1886; except the last photograph in the album. This was taken by an unidentified photographer, showing "Waitangi Falls where Treaty with Maoris was signed". The views of Mount Tarawera showed the area before the eruption, including the village of Te Ariki, at the head of Lake Tarawera, the Pink and White Terraces, Lake Tarawera and Rotomahana. Views after the eruption showed the first group to ascend Tarawera. This was Percy Smith's party, of which Charles Spencer was a member. These images show the damage done to the village of Te Wairoa, the Pink and White Terraces, and showed the enormous changes to the landscape, including the rift which developed between Mount Tarawera and Rotomahana. Inscriptions: Album page - "Presented to J.F.L. Jetter by his Te Puke Friends. Te Puke, 12th August 1886" Quantity: 1 album(s) Album(s).
