Description: Delegates to the Army Surgeons Congress CMF held in Rome in February 1945; audience with Pope Pius XII; and a large group of officers, three of them naval, in Rome. The photographer was G Felici. Four smaller photographs taken in Senigallia of the Pink Villa which was consultants offices. One of a group of four officers outside the Pink Villa in February 1945 has the names Donoghue, self, Boyd, Short. On another taken in May 1945 the names are less legible: Standish, Spence, McGlashan, Barrowclough, Budge(?), Cothell, Kenrich(?), Steere(?). Description: Christina Dorothy (Dorothy) Hardy (nee Mackay) born Gore. Recalls attending Tapanui District High School and working for a firm in Heriot, Otago Farmers before commencing to train as a nurse at Dunedin Hospital 1939. On completion of training specialised in theatre work and in 1944 volunteered for WWII. Describes time at Burnham Camp, experience at Taiaroa Heads for one month and eventually leaving New Zealand on the Maunganui hospital ship. Describes journey and stop overs en route, eventually arriving at destination, Helwan Hospital. Gives details of hospital, uniforms, conditions, type of injuries, treatment for burns and social life. Mentions Mess dances and the New Zealand Club in Cairo. Refers to Lady Freyberg and the Tuis. Talks about meeting future husband and gives reasons for his Maori name, Kiwa, even though he wasn't Maori. Recalls being transferred to northern Italy, a place called Senigallia near Ancona. Recalls villages being badly bombed. Talks about Dr Charles Burns from Wellington. Recalls shortly after arriving in Italy contracting Amoebic [Dysentery] which resulted in finally being sent home on the Tamaroa (ship) arriving New Zealand March 1946. Recalls passengers on board the homeward journey which included Selwyn Toogood, Father Ryan and Father Spring (Roman Catholic padres) Martin Sullivan (Anglican padre) and many war brides. Description: Volume is a carbon copy typescript of Arthur K Smith's work 'Life in Northern Italy'. Manuscript was typed by Miss Valmai R Baird at Wingatui Otago in 1945 and 1946. The narrative covers Smith's last nine months in Northern Italy serving with the Number One New Zealand Convalescent Depot at Senigallia. Topics include military life, travel, local people, hospital treatment, education, and hockey. Smith describes his admittance to hospital for worms and treatment at Bari, also discusses his inferiority complex [mental health]. On leave he travelled to cities such as Rome, Venice, Loreto, and San Marino, and viewed local castles, including for Gradara. Smith describes military accomodation such as Albergo Danielli and the New Zealand Forces Club at Venice. A teacher before the war, Smith continued his interest in education visiting Rome University and Tasso primary school. Smith records the announcement of and celebration of Victory over Europe Day. A hockey player, Smith continued his sporting activities and describes matches and playing hockey with the New Zealand Forces Hockey team. At the end of the memoir Smith leaves Italy to return to New Zealand. The memoir mentions the names of several people Smith met including Padre West, Lew Billington, Ken White of Gore, Vern Joel, Sergeant Major W R Hardy, Sergeant Major B M A Maslin, Sergeant T Heene, Sergeant A Stevens, Corporal A Williams, Bombardier V Joel, Driver L H Shillington, Private Hayes, Reg Hayden, and Jack Maydon. Group portraits of No 1 & No 2 Platoons of Mechanical Equipment Company of New Zealand Divisional Engineers; various sports and entertainments including a trotting meeting at Montebello, Trieste; swimming regatta; athletics; hurdles; yacht race; skiing and staying at the NZ Alpine leave centre at Madonna di Campiglio, in the Brenta di Dolomiti (Southern Dolomites); sports in Florence (Allied track and field championships); swimming championships at Rome; water polo; motor cycle speedway events and rugby.
