Also research material used in the creation of the booklet. Comprises: - Printed booklet 'One Man's War, Remants of a Gallipoli Diary by Sapper A Bellingham, N.Z. Field Engineers' created by Neil and Juliet Bellingham, John Fulton, and Paul Martinovich circa 2015-2016. The booklet contains: a transcript of Arthur Bellingham's war diary, originally transcribed by Arthur, Ann Long and Ina Lazenby in 1990; prefaces from Ann Long, written in 1990, and R.C. (Bob) Bellingham, written in 1992; a postscript written by Paul Martinovich circa 2015; supplementary photographs and maps including some of Arthur and his brother Ernie; copies of drawings from the diary; and a summary of Arthur's military service. - Newspaper clipping 'Campaign at Gallipoli "pretty rough going"'. Author unidentified. Likely published in the Rotorua Daily Post in 1987. Discusses Arthur's time spent at Gallipoli and includes a photograph of Arthur with his service medal. - Printout of email correspondence between John Fulton and Juliet Bellingham, received 21 August 2015, subject "Bob's notes". It contains a copy of a note Bob Bellingham wrote in 1992, that was included in the booklet as a preface to the transcript with handwritten annotations by an unidentified hand. - Photocopy of a handwritten letter from Neil Bellingham on behalf of himself, Juliet Bellingham, John Fulton, and Paul Martinovich. The letter is addressed "Dear All" and the subject is "Arthur Bellingham's Gallipoli diary". Collins' "New Zealand" Pocket Diary for 1915

Description: Diary with entries for the period 28 June to 31 December 1915. Volume prefaced with note describing the complete sequence of five volumes for the period "from 1st July 1915 to 9th Sept 1919" and on page for 1 May: "Dedication. To my comrades who in the Eastern land of sin sand sun and soldiers sorrows were good to me." In the first entry Jackson notes: "Last week after many failures I managed to get passed by a Doctor as 'medically fit' and also got into the Sixth Rfs [reinforcements] at the same time", and goes on to say "I would only have been too pleased to go to the war sooner but must say 'better late than never', & let it go at that." Diary describes enlistment, time spent at Addington, before travelling to Timaru, and again by railway back to Christchurch, and then on board the Wahine at Lyttelton bound for Wellington. On arrival in Wellington accommodation in Buckle Street Barracks. From there the new recruits moved to Trentham Military Camp. Describes departure from Wellington on transport ship 'Tofua' and sea journey to Aden. From there on to Suez and Zeitoun, and visits to Alexandria and Cairo. Jackson goes on to describe time on Lemnos Island, his joining of the machine gun section, and then transportation over to the Dardenelles with action at the front at Gallipoli, including descriptions of Hill 60. Return to Egypt, Alexandria, Cairo and camp at Heliopolis in December 1915. The diary is mostly written in graphite and purple pencil, with some annotations in ink. Title transcribed from item. Description: Folder contains correspondence from Stichbury home to his family during World War One. Includes letters to his parents (William and Hannah Stichbury), sisters (Myrtle, Eva and Elsa Stichbury) and brothers (Charlie, Martin and Tim [sic] Stichbury). Letters detail training in Zeitoun Camp and departure to Gallipoli via Port Mudros. Further letters detail the landing at ANZAC Cove 25 Apr 1915 and subsequent fighting with the Turkish Army. Stichbury wounded in action on 8 May 1915. Also includes letter to Mrs Stichbury from a family friend relating to Vincent Stichbury's injuries at Gallipoli. Further correspondence relates to Stichbury's recuperation in Malta and return to Gallipoli in August 1915 with a promotion to sergeant. Much of the correspondence relates to domestic family events back home in New Zealand and other family members involved fighting in the War. Title page states: "Diary of C. J. Claridge 12/977 - Auckland Infantry, August 1914 - January 1916: While serving in the Auckland Infantry Battalion. New Zealand Expeditionary Force". Mounted photographic prints include group portrait of Gallipoli veterans at 50th anniversary meeting at Auckland War Memorial Museum on 16 October 1964. Ephemera mounted in diary includes: printed leaflet promoting free entry to "Grand Casino Bosphore - Soldier's Rest" at Bab El Hadid Square; "Cazino Ambassadeur" at Avenue Farouk, Cairo; and "Kursaal Music-Hall" at Emad el Din Street, Heliopolis. Also includes a 6-page letter from Claridge to his mother, dated Camp Zeitoun, 20 March 1915 (laid in at page 143), and a postcard to his mother dated 7 April 1915, featuring the 3rd Auckland Company marching, with annotations naming some subjects, including Claridge (mounted page 50). Some of the newspaper articles were written by Claridge or based on his communications (see for example mounted articles facing page 50), while others published excerpts from the diary (see page 67). Description: Diary begins 12 Jun 1915 as Humphreys embarks with the 5th Field Artillery to Egypt. In brief diary entries he records the voyage out, weather conditions, his work with the horses aboard ship and other duties. Comments on a burial at sea on 21 Jun 1915. Arrives Egypt on 23 Jul 1915 and heads to Cairo and the military camp. On 3 Aug 1915 boards his transport vessel heading for Lemnos. Lands at ANZAC Cove on 9 Aug 1915 and is nearly blown to bits under heavy shelling. Humphreys settles into his work for the next four months based at the beach working with transporting ammunition, night patrols and occasionally works in the telephone room learning Morse code. Many comments regarding dysentery and general health in the harsh living conditions. Updates on his correspondence with family members in New Zealand. On 17 Dec 1915 Humphreys' artillery unit burns the ordnance and destroys weapons then evacuates Gallipoli for Imbros Island. Christmas Day is spent at Lemnos, on 31 Dec 1915 arrives at Ismalia. Diary also includes small lists of food rations. Source of title - Supplied Private Humphreys served with the 5th Field Artillery, NZEF and saw active service at Gallipoli during World War I. Description: Diary continues from MSX-2545 with Malone describing arriving at Alexandria awaiting embarkation aboard the `Itonus'. Describes weather and soldier's activities aboard the vessel en route to the island of Lemnos. Arrive Port Mudros on 14 Apr 1915. Details an exploration of the island and its people. Troops practice disembarking, landing, and exercises on land. Prepares the men for landing at Gallipoli Peninsula. Quotes the special order for battle from General Sir Ian Hamilton, 21 Apr 1915. Prepares rations and supplies for his men. Leave Port Mudros at 6am on 25 Apr 1915. (25 Apr - 28 May 1915 on Message forms [MS-Papers-4130]). 29 May 1915 at Quinn's Post, describes Turkish attacks and fighting conditions. Malone took over commanding Courtney's Post on 1 Jun 1915. Details military communications and tactics, shelling and sniper fire. Malone takes over Quinn's Post with two of his Companies on 9 Jun 1915. Works through to late July when he is sent for a rest on the island of Imbros. Returns to Quinn's Post and records daily events through to Sunday 1 Aug 1915. Margin includes a count of Wellington Infantry Battalion's casualties to that date.
