Description: Views mostly in and around New Plymouth but including clergymen gathered for Archdeacon Govett's jubilee in 1898, crowds in Pukekura Park for Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubliee in 1897 and a Floral Fete in 1896, a homestead called Tokotahi near the Tiraumea River in Pahiatua County, the old mountain house on Mount Taranaki, and an area called Grant's Braes (now Waverley) in Dunedin. Description: Photograph album containing Taranaki scenes. Album created by John Strauchon, Chief Surveyor & Commissioner of Crown Lands for the Taranaki District between 1894 and 1902; photographs possibly taken by him? (Pages 32 onwards are empty). The first section of the album (pages 1-16) contain images of Mount Egmont (Mount Taranaki), including two accomodation houses, the Manaia Mountain House (Or Dawson's Falls Mountain House), and the Egmont Mountain House; Fanthams Peak; the Kapuni Stream; and Bell's Falls and Dawson Falls. The second part of the album (pages 18-31) contains views in and around New Plymouth, including two of celebrations during Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee in 1897. Description: Shows the palisade of a pa on a clifftop, with figures scaling the cliff by means of ladders coming up from the water level. One of a series of such sketches, the remainder in Auckland Museum (one signed: C. Heaphy), originals for lithographs (held at B-043-015: Ellis 633-636). Waimate Pa was near the mouth of the Patea River, Taranaki. See also Heaphy's 'View on the Patea River, Cooks Straits, 1839' (A-146-004). Heaphy visited Waimate Pa in September 1840 in the company of Robert Park and Robert Stokes. Description: Steep hills divided by a steeply-falling river. Red-coated soldiers of the 50th Regiment shown with the track and bridge over which they moved their cannons. Several Maori standing close to the bridge and a waterfall. Further Maori indicated on top of the hill to the right. Lieutenant Thomas, in charge of the transport, shown on the peak of a hill to the left. 'Cannonade' appears to be an error for carronade, a short heavy cannon with wide bore. Note on back in the hand of the copyist: "Having failed in obtaining Mrs Guard and her two children from the natives although H M ship bombarded the forts and destroyed their canoes (ammunition being demanded in exchange by them which Her Majesty would not have been pleased to part in Traffic as they wished it). Two cannonades were landed 2 miles to the Eastward under protection of the ship and military dragged across this creek and put in position on a bank commanding the ports from which the natives were driven and possession taken" Other Titles - Carronades Inscriptions: Recto - top left: Sailors transporting the cannonade with their guards.
