Description: Interviews with 14 men who served in the civilian Merchant Navy during the Second World War, sailing on New Zealand, British, American and Norwegian ships. Most are New Zealand-born but two British seaman who came to New Zealand at the end of the war are also included. Those interviewed held various jobs and ranks: as officer, able and ordinary seaman, bosun or deck boy, marine engineer, fireman or coal-trimmer, steward, pantryman or baker. Several of the interviewees suffered the loss of their ships through attacks by submarines, bombers or warships, and two were taken prisoner by the Japanese. Description: Consists of 3 logs written by Mackay on the whaling ship Splendid for the years 1875-1877. The logs detail the voyages of the ship from Port Chalmers to various places around New Zealand, the Southern Ocean and into the Pacific. Also contains discharge papers dated Oct 1877; an annotated copy of `The Cruise of the Cachalot' by Frank T Bullen published in 1899 and an annotated proof of a galley for a newspaper article, ca 1930s, reporting on Mackay's life and his claim that Bullen's 1899 book was in fact based on the Splendid. Description: Photographs taken during the New Zealand British Empire Games team's journey to Britian on the SS Remuera. Passengers, boat drill and other shipboard activities are recorded. There are pictures of the Panama Canal, and a few of Colon. Though there are photographs of athletes and one or two of the events at the Games, this album is more about socialising and the places visited while in England. Swimming pools are prety well covered including the Kingfisher's Pool in Epping Forest where the New Zealand swimmers trained, and the big new covered Empire Swimming Pool in London. Views from their London hotel, Wimbeldon, and a visit to Eton College where they were looked after by school boys in top hats and tails. While visiting Croydon Airport they took a flight over the outer suburbs of London in a multi engined air liner. They saw Windsor Castle, the trooping of the colour, and visited Chester Cathedral. Description: Photographs relating to the career of Captain Alexander Mitford Edwin in the Mediterranean and East Africa during World War I and as a shipmaster for the Union Steam Ship Co. During the war Captain Edwin commanded the Wahine, the hospital ship Marama, and the Willochra. Description: Albums compiled by John Horsman, chiefly relating to his time travelling the world as a radio officer for the merchant navy, between 1953 and 1963. Also includes two albums, mainly relating to his school teaching career and publications, which compromise of images taken between 1945-1948 and 1963-1979. One album includes ephemeral material dating 1972 to 1984. There are eight loose prints of the same subjects. Most photographic prints were taken by Horsman. Seven albums document his time while working as a radio officer on various cargo and passenger ships. Each album records the voyages chronologically through the use of hand-drawn maps and notes concerning ship call signs, routes, radio equipment, distances, ship specifications, and the radio log. The pictorial content of the albums focuses on leisure time activities, and comprises tourist postcards of ports visited by Horsman, and snapshots taken by Horsman. Many prints show the other sailors, both on board the ships and at a range of ports. Few of the images relate to the job of a radio operator. Two albums relate to Horsman's teaching career and writing, and to his family. They comprise images taken while he was teaching at New Zealand rural primary schools 1945 to 1953, and rural secondary schools 1963 to 1975. Both show scenes around the schools, and the school children. One album also includes pictures of rural scenes in the Auckland Region, and city and domestic architecture in Auckland, which were taken in 1948 while he prepared his thesis in economic history. One album includes family photographs, plus clippings related to his educational publications and to his book "The coming of the pakeha to Auckland province" published in 1972. Interview with Edwin Kaminski

Description: Edwin Kaminski born in Poland 1921. Talks about his early life in Poland. Recalls attempting to escape from Poland after the outbreak of World War II, being captured and sent to work in the coal mines in Russia from where he eventually escaped and made his way to England. Talks about the beginning of his seafaring career as a marine engineer and the shipping companies he worked for. Recalls emigrating to New Zealand with his wife and working in Haast for five months before joining P Ferons & Son Ltd, who owned fishing vessesls. Describes his work, maintaining the company's vessels which, directly or indirectly, numbered 80. Recalls a nine month period living aboard a converted naval fairmile which was anchored in Halfmoon Bay, Stewart Island and was used, as an interim measure, as a floating refrigeration plant to service some of the local fleet, until a freezer could be built ashore. Talks about fishing in the Chatham Islands and describes his involvement in the setting up of a processing plant at the Chathams by Ferons Ltd during the tail end of the crayfish boom which occurred there from 1965 to 1971. Discusses crayfish processing and his experiences with the locals on the Chathams. Recalls being an engineer on a number of Chatham Island convoys which travelled between the Chathams and Lyttelton. Mentions the vessel `La Paloma' which was lost with all hands during one of the convoys. Talks about the salvage of the fishing vessel `Rosaleen' which he nursed to Lyttelton. Joined the Marine Department in the early 1970s as chief engineer of their new fisheries research ship `James Cook' and discusses the problems in preparing the vessel for her new role. Recalls later working on the department's new vessel the `Kaharoa' which was built in Whangarei during the early 1980s. Retired from MAF in the late 1980s and talks about his occasional work as chief engineer on a variety of vessels being delivered to or from New Zealand. Ends the interview with his view of the present fishing industry in New Zealand and comments on some of the policies. Includes sketches of Cape St Vincent, St John Island and an unidentified place, and three unidentified photographs.
