Description: According to the caption accompanying this photograph, this image shows the site at Ahuaha, where an incident occurred between the 57th Regiment and Pai Marire followers on the 6th of April 1864, leading to the death of Captain Lloyd, and others. Photographer [W Jordon?]. The caption on the photograph reads: "Figure shows position of riflepits at Ahuahu where Capt Lloyd of 57 Regt & others were killed in a fight with Hauhaus Apl 6th 1864. The Europeans killed were decapitated & Capt Lloyd's head preserved in Maori fashion & used as [a?] medium in the Hauhau fanatical rites." Photographer, and author of caption: [W Jordon?] Text from `The Colonial New Zealand Wars' by Tim Ryan and Bill Paham, 1986, page 109 reads: "...Captain T W J Lloyd took a mixed party of the 57th and volunteers to comb the area with the purpose of destroying crops which would sustain the rebels. Part of his force was resting at Te Ahuahu when a sudden onslaught of Maori from good cover resulted in the deaths of Lloyd and seven of his men."
