Hogarth, William, 1697-1764 :The Bruiser, C Churchill (once the Revd!) in the character...

Date: 1763

From: Hogarth, William 1697-1764 :The original works of William Hogarth. London, sold by John and Josiah Boydell, 1790

Reference: D-020-101

Description: A pug guards the frame in which a great bear (Churchill) with a torn clergyman's collar appears, grasping a huge club of NB (New Briton) and `Lye' (lie) written on the knots, and drooling into a quart of beer. Pug is urinating on Churchill's `Epistle to Hogarth', and a poor box stands on `The North Briton' with a `comedy' of Wilke's subscription, `A new pay to pay old debts'. In this later state of the print Hogarth has placed a small framed picture propped on the palette (lower right). It shows a planned tomb for Pitt. He is reclined beneath the `millstone' of his pension. On each side are the emblems of his city supporters, the `Guildhall giants', Gog and Magog, one of whom is crowning the hero: but Pitt is borrowing a match from one of them to fire a cannon at the dove of peace. In the centre stands Hogarth himself, whipping a dancing bear (Churchill) on a string. The monkey beside him is Wilkes, riding a mop-stick topped by the cap of liberty as a hobby-horse. In the background stands Lord Temple, their faceless patron. Other - Hogarth reworked the cooper plate of his own portrait (A painter and his pug) and replaced his image with that of a bear, and added other details. Source of descriptive information - Jenny Uglow. Hogarth, a life and a world. London, 1997 Inscriptions: Recto - beneath image - Title Enraged by the publication of Mr Wilkes's portrait, Charles Churchill wrote a most virulent and vindicative satire which he entitled `An Epistle to William Hogarth'.
