Description: Album compiled by a member of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force, 1914-1918. It contains views of New Zealand Expeditionary Force camps in England, the Grey Towers Hospital, Te Whare Puni club for New Zealand soldiers, Royal Bath Hospital (at Harrogate), Oatlands Park Hotel (in use as a convalescent hospital), Malta, Gallipoli (including the landing party, in the bivvies, Anzac Cove and Walker's Ridge) and Capetown. Activities at the various camps and convalescent hospitals included mending gear, playing two-up, skinning hares for dinner, playing bowls, snow-fights. Description: Photographs relating to William George Malone and his military career during World War I, including scenes in New Zealand, Egypt and Gallipoli, and the military service of his sons. Photographs taken between circa 1908 and 1916, plus prints taken in 1923 and ca 1940s. Includes wartime photographs that were taken, developed and printed by Malone. Other photographs taken by a range of photographers. Some smaller prints are duplicated as larger prints on mounts. Nearly all photographs are identified and dated. There are explanatory notes from the donor. Includes pre World War One views taken in New Zealand; Lieutenant Colonel William George Malone in his dress uniform (possibly taken after his promotion to Lt. Colonel), assembled soldiers wearing lemon squeezer hats (possibly Territorial Force at camp), 11th Regiment (Taranaki Rifles) 1913, Ida Katherine, second wife, and son Maurice with others on wharf farewelling NZEF troops 14 October 1914 (taken by W.G Malone from troopship 'Arawa'. Also includes view of W.G. Malone clean shaven in army uniform (uncertain date, possibly 1908 or 1915). One group of views were taken in Egypt and Gallipoli during World War One by W.G Malone or possibly with his camera. Views in Egypt show Capt. R.E Coningham (?), 10 Ghurka Rifles, outside army tent at El Kubri, Egypt, G.S.O (General Staff Officer) to Malone; William George Malone with Capt Horne (Home?) sight-seeing at the Sphinx and Pyramids, Luxor; Arab guides and camels; Malone on his horse 'The Don' in Zeitoun Camp; and framed photograph of Ida Katherine on desk in Malone's tent. Prints on pages extracted from photograph album include a view of 'The Farlands', the second Malone family homestead, Stratford. Views taken at Gallipoli show W.G Malone outside his bivouacs on Walkers Ridge and Cape Helles, including scene of Malone with (possibly) Capt R.E. Coningham. Gallipoli views include original prints taken April to May 1915 by W.G. Malone showing views of fortifications on Walkers Ridge; the battlefield of Krithia; the ship 'Clyde' run ashore at old Sedd-El-Bahr Port ruins; Reserve Gully; burial of dead Turkish soldiers on the day of armstice to bury the dead (24 May 1915). One group of photographs show the sons of W.G Malone in military uniforms. Those in World War One uniforms are Maurice Patrick (serial no. 11/1338) (solo portrait and group portrait with machine gun soldiers and equipment), Brian Bernard (5/2), Terence Joseph (11/553), Edmond Leo (11/699). Includes William Bernard 'Barney' circa 1939 to 1943. Also includes soldier who served under W.G. Malone, Sergeant Jacob ('Jack') Randup Moller standing outside King George V Hospital, Rotorua. Description: Diary was originally owned by Lieutenant Douglas Bryan, later used by Malone. Front of diary includes a soldiers roll, section rolls, roll of specialists, detail of men to be left aboard first disembarkation, and command orders by D Bryan. Rough survey of trenches of Wellington Battalion with diagram sketch. Diary of Malone then continues from MSX-2546 on 2 Aug 1915. Details an accident by an Engineer Sergeant throwing a mortar bomb and was killed. Malone goes on a reconnaissance trip on HM Destroyer `Colne'. 4 Aug 1915 prepares to be relieved of command at Quinn's Post and take his Battalion to Happy Valley in readiness for the battle of Chunuk Bair. Details the planning for this attack including reconnaissance from Walker's Ridge. Last entry is a conference with Army Corps Commander in Rest Gully on 5 Aug 1915. McGilp, Clyde, 1888-1918 : Gallipoli historical records and war diary, 1st Battery, NZFA

Description: War diary contains a day-by-day account of operations of McGilp's 1st Battery for most of 1915 with brief entries for the beginning of 1916. Diary begins on 9 Apr 1915 with troops leaving Zeitoun Camp for Alexandria. Depart aboard the transport vessel `HMAT Katuna" for Gallipoli. Arrive at Lemnos and continue training and the slinging of horses in preparation for the Gallipoli landing. Infantry disembarks at a beach one and a half miles North of Kaba Tepe on 25 Apr 1915. McGilp stays aboard the transport vessel to disembark further troops and supplies. Entries include details of fighting manoeuvres of soldiers and shelling by the Navy, condition of the horses and the burial of the dead. Transport returns to Alexandria 12 May 1915 so the horses can be exercised. Diary note that McGilp took over command of the 1st Battery on 20 Jul 1915. In August McGilp details the Battery's support for the 1st Australian Infantry Brigade in the battle of Lone Pine ridge. Continues with details of artillery support for the New Zealand infantry and the Wellington Battalion on taking Chunuk Bair on 8 Aug 1915. The remainder of the diary records the bombing of the Turkish Army as they counter-attacked gaining the positions they had lost earlier. Major McGilp records the daily rounds from his guns, casualty lists of his own soldiers, observation and movements of Turkish troops and arms at Lone Pine, Pine Ridge, Chunuk Bair, The Nek, Baby 700, The Apex, The Chessboard, Johnston's Jolly, Quinn's Post, Rhododendron Spur, Legge Valley, Table Top, Sari-Bair, Gun Ridge, Owen's Gully, Scrubby Knoll, Poplar Grove, Hill 971, Walden's Point, Mortar Ridge, Meadow Field and the Maimais. On 14 Nov 1915 Lord Kitchener visits the 1st Battery at their observing station on Walker's Ridge. From 14 Dec 1915 the 1st Battery prepares to evacuate Gallipoli by destroying or burying beneath land mines surplus stores and ammunition. 6.10pm on 19 Dec 1915 the last gun fires its final shell and is dismantled and carried to the beach. By 7.40pm Major McGilp and his gunners have embarked aboard the `HMT Queen Louise' to Lemnos. Diary includes a list of the 22 soldiers who evacuated alongside Major McGilp. Troops then head to Ismailia in Egypt. Diary is complete on 8 Jan 1916. A further note on 6 Apr 1916 indicates that Major McGilp is embarking to France and a new diary commences. Last entry is a newspaper cutting depicting Major McGilp in action in the Somme, France. Diary also contains throughout its pages extracts from the Brigade's official diary, maps, topographical drawings, notes on military projections, force orders and photographs. Also a letter to Mary McGilp from Major Fred Waite returning McGilp's diary to her, Apr 1919. Extracts from McGilp's diary were used in the volume `The New Zealanders in Gallipoli'. Source of title - Transcribed from item Major McGilp left New Zealand in 1914 and commanded the 1st Battery of the 1st Brigade, New Zealand Field Artillery during the Galipoli Campaign. He subsequently saw action in Egypt, the Balkans and the Western Front in France. Returned to New Zealand in Jul 1918 to be an artillery instructor at Featherston Military Camp.
