Black basalt outcrop, on a ridge about 420 metres high, extending from near the Whangarei Heads, norhtwards along behind McLeod Bay on the North side of the inner entrance to the Whangarei Harbour. Legends relating to the origins of the outcrop all centre round a local chief named Manaia.

Description: Reproduction of a watercolour by Charles Heaphy, produced for `Encounter with Eden', an exhibition of paintings and drawings from the Rex Nan Kivell Collection, National Library of Australia. One of a set of six greeting cards produced by the National Library of New Zealand featuring works of art from the exhibition. Very similar to a watercolour in the Alexander Turnbull Library called `Bream Head, Whangarei'. However Bream Head is some distance to the right and this is Manaia.
