[Watling, Thomas], 1762-1814? Attributed works. :A view of the Town of Sydney in the Co...

Date: 1802

By: Blake, William Standen, active 1802; Watling, Thomas, 1762-; Turnbull, Alexander Horsburgh, 1868-1918

Reference: B-053-006

Description: A view of Sydney Cove (now Circular Quay) with houses and businesses surrounding the area close to the water, Government House in the middle distance, a windmill on the skyline and the rising sun in the distance beyond the north shore and the entrance to the harbour. In the foreground, an Aboriginal man is sheltering with a parasol two European women out for a stroll. Beneath the image is a coat of arms, bearing the words Vigilantia robur voluntas, possibly Hunter's coat of arms It is possible that W. S. Blake may have commissioned this print, rather than being the artist or engraver. According to McCulloch's Encyclopaedia of Australian Art, this work was engraved by Blake from a painting done on the spot by an as yet unkown artist. There is no W. S. Blake listed as an engraver in Benezit's Dictionnaire des peintres ...(Paris, Grund, 1976). He is not listed in Joan Kerr's Dictionary of Australian artists, but is mentioned in her preliminary work of the same title ... Working paper I. A-H (Sydney, Power Institute, 1984), with the names William Standen. Kerr suggests here that the print may be after an oil tentatively attributed to artist Thomas Watling. The 1998 Australian Art Sales Digest lists a sale of a hand-coloured copy of this print and gives Blake the first names William Standen. The print sold for A$14,500, August, 1993, Christie's Sydney. Other Titles - Blake's view Quantity: 1 b&w art print(s). Physical Description: Engraving, 239 x 420 mm Provenance: Collection of Alexander Turnbull
