Description: Album of photographs (mainly landscapes) taken by John Tenison Salmon between 1930 and 1941. The album is divided into sections (not in chronological order), many relating to camping holidays with an unidentified companion. Areas covered included a Christmas holiday trip in 1937 to the East Coast and thermal regions around Tikitere and Waimangu, the Morere nikau forest, Mount Maunganui beach, Hongi's track, the buried village at Te Wairoa, and Rotorua. A North Auckland trip in December 1938 included camping as far north as Paihia, Russell and Waitangi, the Waitangi Falls, the Waipoua Kauri Forest and Trounson's Kauri Park, also Auckland, the Kaingaroa Plains and Waiouru Valley. Areas of erosion were noted, and mangrove swamps. An Anniversary Day trip (22-23 January 1939) took Salmon to the Putangirua Pinnacles in the Wairarapa; and in September 1941 he went to the Hawke's Bay area. In 1945 he went on a North Island Expedition working on malaria control, with ?Bissett, and William John Phillipps. February 20-27 1939 was a trip across the Napier-Taupo Road, and included a number of images of the silt and desolation caused by a great flood in the Esk Valley in 1938. In 1936 Salmon went on a geological trip to the Rotorua area, and at Orakei Korako he was particularly interested in "sinter formations" (thermal deposits of silica, of which the Pink and White Terraces were examples). Description: Photographs taken by John Tenison Salmon between 1927 and 1955, mostly in the Wellington Region. Some are art photographs, including still life images of carvings, cloisonne ware and porcelain, and some are tinted. One sequence shows the Dominion Museum and Art Gallery, both interior and exterior views. Some were taken in April 1936 before the building was furnished; others were taken later in 1936 and 1937, including the Kauri Hall, the Sculpture Hall, the Art Gallery, the National Portrait Gallery, the Academy Gallery, the Maori Hall, and the entrance vestibule. Civic events are shown in illuminations at the Government Buildings for the King George V Silver Jubilee on 12th May 1935; the Carillon tower floodlit for for the coronation of King George VI; and night photographs of the New Zealand Centennial Exhibition in 1940, including the Australian and British pavilions. Wellington is shown in views from various hills and rooftops. Specific trips and occasions include a Waikaremoana trip in 1930; the Victoria University College Natural History Society trip to Butterfly Creek in 1933; a Camera Club outing near Mangaroa Hill in 1938; and celebrating Xmas in Auckland in 1952. The van follows State Highway two with frequent deviations from it into various back block localities. Another section of the journey is from Wairoa to Taupo via Lake Waikaremoana and the Kaingaroa Forest. Children as library users and at some of the schools where the van stops are featured. Opposite Ashton's Cabinet Works is a large open space and children at play. Description: Album of photographs taken around the Taupo District. Many are contacts from 35mm film; some are prints, taken by John Tenison Salmon between 1955 and 1965. Most of the images are indicative of John Salmon's interest in photography. Examples can be seen in the series of images taken in various lights on the Taupo Golf Links including on misty mornings, the "Picket fence" of fishermen standing at the mouth of the Waitahanui River Mouth on Lake Taupo, a series showing Pohutu Geyser playing, views of the Aratiatia Rapids and Huka Falls, and views of Mission Bay where he spent camping holidays. Three views show Maori ramparts on Motutaiko Island (Lake Taupo), several show dwellings at Waihi, and one shows a group of Maori children in a hot pool at Whakarewarewa. Description: Views of New Zealand taken by Sir Edmund Oswald Teale, who visited New Zealand to attend a meeting of the Australasian Association for the Advancement of Science in Dunedin between December 1903 and January 1904. Images include a number showing geological formation along the route between Napier and Taupo; images of hot springs and mud pools, and the Aratiatia Rapids; Napier and Wellington. Views of the South Island include many in the Mount Cook region, and show various glaciers, including the Tasman Glacier, Hochstetter Glacier, and the Hooker Glacier; geological aspects of moraines, crevasses and moulins associated with glaciers; Lake Pukaki; alpine flowers in the Tasman Valley; a carriage and horses near the Hermitage, with Mount Sefton visible behind; the Mataura River and Bluff.
