Recalls time at Auckland Teachers' College; development of interest in cricket and basketball; Probationary year after college and teaching experience in rural schools; teaching arrangements during Polio epidemic; involvement and requirements of refereeing; Netball Umpires' Association, gaining badge 1943/44 and comments on lack of guidance for coaches. Explains difficulties of playing 7-a-side game and details differences in Australian game. Explains relationship between coaching and refereeing. Description: Photographic negatives of images from one roll of film, taken by Judith Binney in 1999, chiefly of scenes near the site of the meeting house Tama-ki-Hikurangi near Galatea, Whakatane, on the upper Rangitaiki River. Also six images of Tama-ki-Hikurangi meeting house at Waiohau, Whakatane district, Bay of Plenty. (Note: the house was moved in 1904 from Te Houhi (near Galatea) and re-opened at Waiohau in 1909). Description: A single-storied bungalow with a verandah, L-shaped, behind a hedge with garden gate The house, later burnt down, was the home of the Wylie family. Adelaide Wylie married Elsdon Best. The house was moved to the site shown in this view in 1889 by Joseph Wylie (uncle of Adelaide), the 4th schoolteacher at Fort Galatea (1887-1903). There were two matching buildings, shown here on the left, pulled to this site from the 1875 redoubt. The right hand addition was put on by Joseph Wylie. The small lean-tos on the far left were added by the Turnbull family, connected to the Wylie family by marriage and living at Galatea, 1909-1953. A large redoubt was established here on 3 and 4 May 1869 by Major John Mackintosh Roberts for a section of Colonel Geroge Whitmore's Armed Constabulary during the hunt for the leader Te Kooti.
