Native school attendance books
Date: 1844-1845, n d
Reference: qMS-1408-1413a
Description: Attendance rolls generally kept by native school teachers, though there is evidence of William Colenso's hand in some of them. Earliest register (1844) is for the school at Waimate, Northland; the remaining books relate to schools in the Wairarapa district. It is noteworthy that both Mohi Torohanga and Paratene Te Okawhare are listed as pupils at the schools; they are the source of the text scribed by Te Whatahoro and subsequently used by S P Smith in writing about Maori cosmology and origins (See JPS 103 no 2); other notable pupils include Te Horo and Paora Te Potangaroa who both established prophetic movements (see Elsmore, B 1989 Mana from Heaven) There is a note on one of the books in Elsdon Best's hand.
