Description: Georgina Kiripuai Te Aomarere was born in Katihiku, Otaki in 1916. Mentions two years of schooling at Saint Josephs Maori Girls College in Taradale, which ended because of the Great Depression. Recalls they were poor, living off seafood and vegetable gardens. Mentions Mr Pike allowing them into the picture theatre without paying. Talks about her first job working for Miss Grant as a housekeeper, and amount paid. Describes working for Mrs Ossian Death for five years. Refers to a trip to Napier for a camping holiday with the Death family, and the food she prepared. Mentions getting drivers licence, and working at the Otaki Sanatorium. Describes her four years of war work in the Petone cigarette factory, WD & HO Wills, working in the steamery and processing tobacco. Notes that she was called up for the army twice but her employer argued to keep her. Mentions returning to Otaki when she became hapu (pregnant). Describes working for the Amos Softgoods Ltd factory, preparing teas, lunches and baking. Refers to taking her baby to work after her mother died. Describes the factory manager Mr Hager, an alcohol-free Christmas party, benefits for longstanding workers, baking for special occasions, birthday presents, a Scottish factory worker, Maori employment in the factory, working in a factory for 33 years, smoking and work, and the impact of a zip replacing boiling water in pots. Talks about being the only Maori in Otaki who gave blood, explains why others didn't. Mentions having to retire from the factory at age 65, and working in a volunteer capacity for her iwi. Mentions her Uncle Karaha, a tohunga, and her father, Whiti Te Aomarere. Description: Gregory Joseph Donohue born Christchurch on New Zealand Metropolitan Cup Day, 1921. Outlines family background - all grandparents came from Ireland between 1863 and 1873. Talks about Irish influence, with reference to songs and celebrations on St Patrick's Day. Recalls childhood; household routines and chores; lack of a telephone until 1950s; Sunday routine; parents personalities; alcohol; education; parents aspirations for their children and decision to join Customs Department. Recalls commencing as a mail boy at 80 pounds (Sterling) a year. Customs personalities mentioned include: C O (Mickey) Trounson (Collector); David Henry Butcher (Sub-collector); Charlie Hawker; John Steinmits (in charge of sheds office); Ed Bridgeman; Tom Williamson (later collector, Timaru); Hector Otto; Gilbert Goodman; A O Stevens (Warehouse keeper); Robert Orton; Charlie Beatty; Hugo Sargenson; Jim Keith and Bill MacDonald (Manufacturing Locker). Describes the system of bonds owned by big firms, system of crown locks on each bond and the `dreary' job of recording casks going in and out. Other aspects of Customs Department discussed include social life, promotion and dress. Outlines involvement in World War II, giving impressions of time in New Caledonia and posting to the Middle East. On returning from War recalls spending time at Mount St Mary's Seminary but in 1947 decided to return to Customs and two years later was posted to Wills Tobacco Factory, Wellington as a clerk, checking recipes for cigarettes, tobacco etc. Describes manufacture of cigarettes, tobacco using, process of supervising and weighing leaves and cigarettes to determine duty payable. Discusses time at Lyttelton as Boarding Inspector (1963-1965) and describes ship searchers, informers and drugs. Recalls happiest years with Customs being in Staff and accounts, with reference to Joe Sullivan. Mentions the Tangiwai Disaster and refers to three Custom men, Barry Burnard, McLeod and W T Clark, travelling together to Auckland for Christmas who were killed. Other Customs personalities mentioned include: Waka Cummings (Comptroller), Steve Gale, `Ninky Poo', Stewart Marshall, Mrs Dobbs (staff and accounts), Dave Hogan, Terry Angus, Matiu Pohatu (a Maori locker in Wellington) and Denis Hepi.
